Visiting Portland next week

Hi again! :)

Thank you all so much for your recommendations for housing! H and I are going next week to apartment search, so I'm really excited. I was wondering if you guys have any recs for restaurants/bars/whatever we should do for fun in the evenings while we're there? We'll be staying downtown. Obviously we'll have plenty of time to do fun things when we move there, but this will be my first time visiting, so I'm looking forward to seeing/doing at least a couple of cool things that downtown Portland has to offer!

Re: Visiting Portland next week

  • Go to happy hour at Portland City Grill!!  Dinner there is really pricey, but they have great happy hour specials in the bar.  The view is incredible - awesome atmosphere.

  • Mother's Bistro is great for breakfast.  We really love everything up on NW 23rd.  If you like sushi, Yuki on 23rd is one of our favorites.  Rose's Deli is a Portland classic, and Pizzicato is delicious.  That and Hot Lips (NW 11th and Johson or so) are our two favorite pizza places, and you can get it by the slice - Beware, Pizzicato on 23rd only does by-the-slice for lunch, not dinner.   Montage, under the Morrison Bridge, is great, especially if you want a later dinner.  Kell's Irish Pub is yummy, and very close to VooDoo donuts which is a must for the experience.  The donuts are average, but they have so many crazy kinds that it's fun just to go.  We love Saint Cupcake, too, on NW 17th and Flanders.  Oh, and Marrakesh, about 21st and Northrup I think, is another favorite.  Go on a Fri or Sat eve and have the 5 course meal.

I heard that voodoo has another store open on the other side of burnside bridge but, I wouldn't go over there.
  • hurricanekeri~ You make it sound like you shouldn't set foot on the east side of the river. It's not that bad! Voodoo Donuts Too is on the corner of NE 15th and Davis, I just don't know how easy it is to get to from downtown. But I wouldn't say it's in an unsafe neighborhood.

As for recommendations for places to eat. Andina in the Pearl is my all-time favorite. I love South Park and Red Star. In Nw around the 21st and 23rd streets there are lots of great restaurants: Urban Fondue, Marrakesh, Lucy's Table.

Check out some of our microbrews. McMenamins has several pubs in the NW: Blue Moon, Ram's Head. There's the New Old Lompoc out on NW 23rd and Thurman or there abouts. Bridgeport Brewing in the Pearl. Widmer Gasthaus on the yellow line in NoPo. Amnesia brewing on NE Alberta. Hopworks on SE Powell. Deschutes Brewery. And so on....

  • Yeah, I'm not getting all the NE hate.  There are pockets that are bad, and there are pockets that are fine, just like the other areas of the city.
  • I live and work in SW PDX.  In general, I prefer it.  However, when it comes to good restaurants/bars, there are definitely better ones on the east side in my opinion.

I do like the brewery selection in NW, however.  Smile

  • Thank you all so much for the recs, I really appreciate it! (Sorry for the delay in responding...)

I'll let you know how it goes and where we end up going! :)

  • Well... I freaking love Portland! It was an awesome (too short) trip; we had so much fun! Your recommendations were fantastic - thank you! Since we were only there for two nights, we clearly couldn't make it to everything, but I think we did a great job making the rounds in the short time we had. We went to Mother's for breakfast one morning, then lunch at food trucks (yum!), dinner/beer at Deschutes, happy hour food and beer at Henry's Tavern, then more beer at one of the McMenamin's bars, and more at Bridgeport. Everything was fantastic.

I have all of your recs noted for when we move in July... I'm so excited to live there! Eek! Haha. Thanks again. :)

  • Glad you liked it!  Was this just a sight seeing trip or were you looking for housing?

I'm reeeeaaalllly late to this, but why specifically would you not "go over there"?  Just curious.

We went to look for housing. :) We found a few places that we liked that are within our budget, so now we just have to wait a few weeks to see if any of them get an opening for when we will be moving!
