How much should I tip?

I took one of my Ragdolls in today to be groomed.  I only have her groomed about twice a year, and I generally tip the groomer about 15 - 20%.  Is that standard/normal?  I'm debating what I should pay today when I pick my cat up.

I tip my hairstylist about 18 - 20% (the same amount I tip a server at a restaurant unless he/she's inattentive/rude/etc.)  I also tipped a massage therapist about the same amount last week.

Am I overtipping for these services?  I can't imagine I'm undertipping but I really don't know what's "normal" for good service anymore.

Re: How much should I tip?

  • I usually do like 15%-20% depending on how good my dog looks. I think that's standard? I just do the same as what I would do at a restaurant.
  • I think you're spot-on.

I usually tip 20% across the board -- facials, massages, manis, pedis, hair stylist, food service... I feel that's more than acceptable.

I will say, though... I've never tipped a groomer.  I guess maybe because my dogs just need a bath and a brush and their nails clipped, and that's it?  They aren't high-maintenance, so I feel like the fee I'm already paying is good enough.  Plus, the one groomer I brought them to was sub-par, so I don't feel bad about it at all.  Shame on me.

  • thats about what i tip unless there is something extra like Rocksie is SUPER dirty or something that would require them to do more work but not enough that would really change the price. KWIM?

I usually tip more for nail and hair services IF they do what I ask and I'm satisfied. If they do what they think is best even after I have asked for something specific, I do about 15%.

  • We don't groom Grace but we tip $3 on a $15 nail trim (20%), so that's what I'd say is normal range.

  • Thanks!  I feel better...sometimes I get paranoid I'm either being a cheapskate or paying way more than I need to.

Gabby's probably a lot of work -- she usually needs a few mats pulled out, her mane and fluffy butt hair get trimmed really short, belly shaved, etc.  I don't know if she's a huge pain in the arse at the groomer or if she's well-behaved, so I feel like I need to tip well in case she's the former.  It's a two person job for me and Craig to comb her mats out.  She doesn't bite but she squirms and "yells" because she hates being held down.  I don't know how groomers do it!
