Meatballs

I am making spaghetti tonight, with sauce from a jar (I found one that we really liked last time we had it, so we're going for it again).

Typically, when I make meatballs, they simmer all day in homemade sauce.  I've never made them otherwise.

Can someone tell me how you make meatballs if you don't cook them in homemade sauce all day?

Chris actually made some last night and just broiled them in the oven while he was prepping the rest of dinner.

  • Mmm! That sounds yummy!

We make >these<, which are baked, except that we use ground turkey. They're delic!

  • Well...I never knew they would be so easy to make.  I'm kind of embarassed that I never make them because I thought they would be too difficult.  Embarrassed

  • Embarrassed I fry my meatballs.  I love love love the crispy outside and soft inside so I fry then in a pan on medium.  I do not put them in sauce until they are on a plate to eat.
  • Kearstin - I don't know if I've ever had them fried.  Maybe it's best that way?  Ha!

Hannah - I meant to say in my last post that those sound similiar to the ones I make, but like I said, mine sit all day simmering in the sauce, rather than just a quick 15 minutes in the oven.

Thanks to all three of you!  Chris will be SO excited to have meatballs in his pasta for once (the homemade sauce thing happens very, very rarely!).

I fry them and then put them on "low" on the crockpot (in jar sauce with some tomato paste added) all day.  :-)  That's if I have all day.  If not, I just fry them and then throw them in the sauce and let them simmer for like 20 minutes before serving.

    Missing our little turkey.

If you want it to be extra easy, you can also buy them premade frozen from the grocery store.  This is typically what I do and then I fry them simply because Jason doesn't really like pasta so I never care enough to put the effort into actually making them homemade.

For real?  Because of the sauce, or pasta in general?  I get tired of red sauce easily but I'll do butter or garlic or hot sauce..  No pasta for Jason?! Tongue Tied

Poor Jason!  He'd never survive in our apt!  We eat it either as a main meal or side probably 3 times a week.

He doesn't like Italian food in general.  I think part of it is because he knows he isn't supposed to eat all those carbs bc of his diabetes, but he said he's never really liked it.  The only time he'll eat it if I make it is if I make chicken fetticini alfredo, but he'll only eat that as a last resort.  I guess everyone has their preferences...I mean, I'm from Maryland and hate seafood with a passion, so to each their own?  I sure do miss Olive Garden though lol.

Update:  He will eat mac n' cheese though or Ramen noodles lol, but that's about as far as he goes pasta wise.

  • I should really consider making homemade meatballs sometime, maybe I will put that on my to-do list for this week.

Lance asked me this morning if I wanted to make the chicken pot pie out of my new recipe book, he must have lost his mind if he thinks I am turning on the oven when it is 90 degrees outside!

You should definitely make them!  And lol on the pot-pie.  We are totally grilling tonight and I think I'm going to have some vodka-lemonade to go along.  Sounds amazing.

Haha!  It's been in the 90's here, too (which is really just the beginning of summer for us - ugh!).  Fortunately, in Houston, central a/c is just a way of life and seems to always be running.  And really, we would have to go about half the year without using our oven if that weren't the case.

Newman's Own has pomegranate lemonade now. It's begging for vodka. Seriously.

And, see, this is when I become jealous.  We had a few really nice nights (and days for that matter!) at the end of last week and I got super spoiled.  We grilled every one of those nights.

Now it's hot and humid again, and I have no desire to sit outside at any part of the day, even after dark :(  Oh, and did I mention we are in a severe drought?  I think it's been over 100 days since we've had a soaking rain shower so everything is really dry, and now we apparently have an armadillo who visits our backyard every morning since we water our lawn.

    ETA (ick!):

My parents moved here in the 70s from upstate NY and swear they'd never move back because of the winters.  But seriously, come summer, I always wonder what is wrong with them.  It's got to be better than this!

I turned my AC on this morning because it is so humid, if it was just a dry heat it wouldn't be so bad but this sticky hot is gross! I have all my blinds shut and the fans on so hopefully the AC doesn't have to run as much. I am actually thinking pizza for dinner sounds good.

I am going to put meatballs on my list for later in the week. Anyone else ever made a swedish meatball dish?

I haven't, but a friend has a Hawaiian meatball recipe that's supposed to be amazing (there's something in it that I don't like so I've never had them).  I'll see if I can find the recipe and post it.

Also, that armadillo is so cute, I have never seen one IRL.

And funny you say that about the armadillo.  I had never seen one super up close until yesterday (usually they are dead on the side of the road).  He was cuter than I expected, but still gave me the creeps.  Partly because he was only about eight to ten feet away from us and didn't seem bothered at all by the fact that we were standing on our patio staring at him.

  • Megan - mmm! please share the recipe!

Erica- that sounds amazing!! I'm going to need to find that.

And Ashlee - I can't believe you think the armadillo is cute!  I think they're nasty!  Of course, the first time I saw once I was in Mississippi and it scared me to death!
