Obviously this is regional, but WTF
Re: Obviously this is regional, but WTF
Absolutely disgusting. I couldn't even watch the whole thing.
I'm sorry, but this is getting scary. This is the third? fourth? video I've seen, all from different rallies. And while perhaps it's not the majority of people attending the rallies saying these things, it's more than an isolated crazy or two. People are yelling this stupid shit, and people near them are either cheering them on or sitting idly by, saying nothing.
I must admit, though, that I love the "Get a job!" responses. That's comedic gold right there. It's the RL equivalent of the "you have no life" responses on the Nest.
The saddest part of that whole thing? The father letting his kid spew the "go throw bombs with Obama" shizz.
Way to make another generation as ignorant as you, dumbazz.
I couldn't make it to the end either. It's just too depressing and really does hurt. Sometimes, living in a melting pot like South Florida makes it easy to forget racism and hatred and bigotry exist. Maybe that's why seeing this stuff day in and day out now is so sad...it's a constant reminder that it does and I so wish it didn't.
It's pretty clear whoever was roaming around with that camera was saying things to the crowd and getting them all fired up. Obviously those people are extreme and what they said was downright offensive but people don't randomly shout stuff out in line without being antagonized. Imagine what would happen at an Obama rally if pro-Bushies showed up and get the libs all riled up. I'm not going to excuse their behavior. What they said offended me and I don't support Obama at all, obviously.
For comparison purposes, here's a video (1 of many) of an anti-war protest where Bush was called Hitler and a baby killer.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=id8fNB0v9BI&feature=related
Or this newsclip of vulgar anti-palin protesters (I think the tshirts called her the C word)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k1TASw9WX18
Or this one where Palin was called a fascist amongst other things
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KMTMDJnizaI
I'm only posting this b/c we all know most libs aren't nutcases and to show that it's the few that make the news. No one would care to watch a video of a bunch of people standing in line silently, which is how every rally I've ever been to functions.
Caden: I agree that libs are just as angry/crazy/loud. My issue, and what upsets me, is the blatant racism. I know it exists but to see it...and people who are proud to show it off, makes me want to cry. It doesn't matter if they are doing it because they were incited...no one should say some of those things (or have the monkey as Obama)
The racism is horrible. So is the sexism against Palin and ever other kind of bigotry. I'm not defending it at all. It's disgusting.
The monkey thing made my mouth drop but Obama is not the only one compared to a monkey, nor does he have it the worst. Google "Bush monkey."
http://www.bushorchimp.com/
For comparison purposes I also googled "Obama monkey." A few results of racist paraphernalia came up, along with a slew of articles and sites denouncing the racist paraphernalia. I didn't find any websites denouncing the Bush/monkey sites. I'm not saying comparing Obama to a monkey is right. It's not. It's racist. But it's being attacked (rightly), unlike what Bush deals with on a daily basis.
Caden, I'm watching the videos. And I agree there is a fringe on both sides, but the part that is scary about the video that I posted is that these people don't appear to be the fringe. They appear to be the norm.
I've seen only the first 5 minutes of the first one posted, but they are not comparable. At all. So far I've seen an organized chant of "What do we want? Peace! When do we want it? Now!" and one poster comparing Bush to Hitler and one calling him a war criminal out of more than 20 displayed. The vast majority of the people there are respectfully disagreeing with their president. Also, one peaceful discussion between a counter-protester and an anti-Bush protester on the meaning of being pro-life. They level of rage and hateful rhetoric between the mainstream attendees at these rallies is not even close. The stuff in the video I posted is something I've never seen at a mainstream event before.
Disgusting. People's behavior over Obama running for prez has reminded me how much racism still exists. I'd really forgotten lately, or thought things got better.
No matter if the videographer or someone else in the crowd shouts something first--these people couldn't say these things if they didn't feel them in their hearts. Mob mentality makes you behave differently than you would if you were standing alone, but it doesn't make you feel differently than you already do.
Ugh. On top of my feelings about what was being said, DD has that same Curious George.
I think you can agree there is a racist element to comparing a black man to a monkey? The Bush example is really a parallel. It's not racist to say Bush looks like a monkey.
IMO McCain and his supporters would do better to condemn these things outright (same goes for Obama when confronted with anything similar) rather than try to explain them away.
Caden: calling Bush a monkey, although mean, is not racist. Comparing Obama to a monkey is horrible. Beyond horrible.
I was referring to the signs not the chants. I can't (quickly) find a video of conservatives going to Obama rallies and protesting while interviewing people in line.
The people in your video aren't everyone or even most people, so I don't agree they're the "norm." They're random wackos shouting while everyone else around them just stands there in line staring across the street. Speaking of acrosss the street, at about the 1:50 mark in your video you can see what they're yelling at - a group of anti-Palin protesters across the street. I have no idea what those protesters were shouting b/c it was edited out, which is unfortunate. But it shows these pro-Palin wackos weren't just randomly shouting out crap in line for no apparent reason.
I guess that's why the racist Obama sites/paraphernalia are attacked and the Bush ones aren't.
Why is sexism not comparable to racism? Or are you simply referring to the numbers? Because 1 person at a McCain rally was enough to raise holy hell in the media.
right but we aren't talking abotu what the media has been upset about...are we? We are talking about what we are upset about.
I think you misunderstood me. Of course I think sexism is just as bad as racism.
I'm talking about the overall nature of the event. One would expect a hostile, irrational fringe, and prior to watching this I believed those who shouted for Obama's head at these rallies were part of that fringe. Something to be horrified at to be sure, but not something to characterize the overall nature of Palin/McCain rallies. However it looked like quite a lot of people in line hold those beliefs, and the rest of them sat by with tacit approval. Four people at an Obama rally wearing Palin/*** t-shirts to me represents the fringe -- they were the only ones behaving in a deplorable manner. This video makes it seem that at this McCain/Palin rally the racists/bigots were the norm.
Ok. That one guy raised holy hell on this board too. (I'm referring to the wacko that yelled "kill him.") I'm offended by the sexist t-shirts too. Aren't you?
I would have posted video of the tshirts if I could find video of the tshirts. The news clip was the best I could do. Maybe someone else can find a clip of the event. I'm trying (trying, and not succeeding!) to get some stuff done today so I can't search right now.
Absolutely. I'm disgusted at racism and sexism. And yes, some Obama supporters are crossing the line with their attacks on Palin. It's incredibly frustrating. Incidentally, I have seen sexism from both sides - I'd definitely say those "Hottest VP" and "Hot Chicks Vote Republican" buttons are as sexist as vulgar t-shirts. It's all awful. I just haven't seen large groups of people at Obama/Biden rallies (so not referring to specifically anti-Palin rallies) wearing sexist t-shirts or yelling things about Palin.
We have no idea how the "normal" Obama rally attenders acted b/c there's no video of people interviewing everyone around them like there is at this Johnstown rally. Is there video somewhere of how these t-shirt wearers were treated?
When I watched the OP video I saw the few shouting at the many. It looked, to me, like everyone in the line was on edge - as I would be if I found myself across the street from a slew of anti-palin protesters - but not everyone was shouting with the wackos and carrying curious george dolls.
I completely disagree that they're as vulgar as the C-word, but OMG I hate those. My DH tried to buy one of those buttons that say "Hottest VP, Coolest State" and I told him to let me know how the bed in the guestroom is. He had no idea why that offended me, and I don't think he gets it even now.
I think these are dispicable, but also not the norm (even though you see the videos on YouTube--they are there for a reason, the more peaceful rallies will be boring to most). McCain has come out against these and said he wants to be respectful and all of his followers to be so as well. It is sad that in the 21st Century, there is still racism out and rampant and needs to be confronted.
It is sad, but to think people will hide it just because it is the 21st Century (or work to alter their skewed perceptions) is not realistic. We all need to fight to change these horrific views on a daily basis, knowing they are not the norm, but knowing they are out there, unfortunately.
I didn't say they were as vulgar. I said they were as sexist as the vulgar t-shirts. One is sexist in a vulgar manner. The other is sexist by valuing women for their looks. I'm sickened by women who wear them - way to move women's progress back 40 years! Way to go gals! I also hate the stupid McCain/Palin yard signs with the big lipstick print on them. Gross.
