Would this be weird? Updated

My friend's dog died.  I just found out via FB, but she'd emailed me about him last week.

Is it weird to send a "sorry for your loss" card for a dog?  If it matters, he was only about a year old and my friend and her FI got him together.

ETA: Awww.  She put this on her FB:

Today Kevin and I lost our best friend. Waylon put up an amazing fight, but could not overcome an infection that had taken over his body.

Waylon, also know as Wayward, Droopy Dragster, Way Way, Waybird, Birdie, Waylon Jennings or "W.J", and best of all "our boy" was more than just a pet. He meant the world to us. He was the best pup anyone could ever ask for, he loved us as much we loved him and anyone who spent anytime with him loved him too.

Love you Way

  • Absolutely not.  I think it is very thoughtful and sweet of you.  Doxy is like my baby and is part of our family.  I know when his time comes I will be crushed, so it would be nice for someone to acknowledge how she's feeling.

Any idea what happened??  He was still a pup! :(

  • Wow that's incredibly sad.  That's not weird at all!!  When my childhood dog passed a few years ago my friend gave me a poem about losing a best friend and I still have it.  It was so comforting at that time and it's a nice memory now.

What the heck happened to the poor baby??

  • He caught pnenomia, poor guy.  He's been in and over of the vet for the past week or so and just wasn't strong enough.

I'm off to Walgreens to get a card.  I'll be back!

    Poor puppy!

It's never a bad idea to send a card.

  • I don't think it would be weird at all.  Maybe they'd think it was odd if they were the kind of people who don't look at their dog as family (weird, I know...I can't even imagine it!), but they clearly looked at him as their kid, so I think it would be very appropriate.  There are actually companies that make sympathy cards especially for losing a pet.  I know you've already gone to Walgreens, but here's a couple in case you didn't find anything, or just want to look:

You are so sweet. Thanks!  I found a loss of pet card at Walgreens that I got teary-eyed when I read, so it's already in the mail!  I should link these in case of future losses though

Aw, you're a good friend Hannah.  That's so sad about their pup.  I don't think it's weird at all to send a card; I think it's very sweet and will probably mean a lot to them.

  • My friend gave me a card when my baby Cooper got hit by a car and it meant so much to me that she thought to do that.

Your friend will probably be so touched that you thought to send her a card.

absolutely send one to her.  There are plenty of "pet loss" cards in the supermarket.  When people lose a pet, it can be very upsetting.  Sending a simple card to show you're thinking of them is not weird, it's kind.  Go for it.
