s/o of garage sale post

if you have garage sales regularly and are successful, please share your tips on what works best! I'm having my first garage sale in about 5 years. It's been that long because I remember how much work it was to put together.  I do mom 2 mom sales and those are a lot of work too, but the tips and tricks I got from others who've done them often really help.  So, share your garage sale hosting tips here!  TIA

Re: s/o of garage sale post

  • Location and timing are key.  I am located near a number of churches so Sunday Mornings are my best sale day.

Putting furniture upfront is another tip.  Many more people will stop at a yard sale with furniture included.

Using tables.  People are lazy and don't like to bend so having items on tables is helpful.

Arranging items attractively and keeping like with like.  Tools together.  Electronics Together.  etc.  Re arrange to fill in any gaps as people buy stuff.

Signs help but only if they are visible and legible.   We used a Red flag to highlight where our yard sale was.

Realistic expectations on prices.  People are looking for a deal and I am looking to make stuff go away.  I am open to negotiation for multiple items but not a pushover.

  • Having "Big" items out front help attract peoples' attention to stop.

We usually use table and EZ ups and sell water or soda because it's usually hot during yard sale days. Plus the EZ up will attract attention to your location.

Provide plastic bags or paper bags for purchased items-.

Clean all items- even though they're your used items, they could be someone else's treasure- and having it clean will help up the "value" and make things more likely to sell.

Organize clothing in sizes and gender-type- boys vs girls. You could even do $5 for a bag of clothes, or whatever you choose to do.

Be reasonably priced, and if someone wants to walk away over $1, just take a $1 off- most times they'll turn around and come back if you drop a price- after all, you just want to get rid of things right?

Advertise on Craigslist and put out bold and easily readable signs- neon marker does not work- make it bold and black so people can read it from the street.

Have an extention cord available for people who want to test out electronics. even though something may be cheap, it isn't worth anything if it's broken.

Don't worry about tomorrow. After all, today is the tomorrow that you worried about yesterday. Take each day as it comes...one at a time. Midnight Baking Adventures Blog
  • thanks for the tips!!  It's a sub sale so the advertising wiill be done for me and I won't be the only house doing one so I'm covered there.

The rest of the tips are great!

  • I have to disagree with the organized table suggestion. I have found that people LOVE to rummage through piles and boxes. I have had to shoo people out of my garage and firmly tell a woman that NO the chair my daughter and mother were sitting in was NOT for sale!
