Clicky Poll: Yarrow

According BH&G Yarrow is a pretty ground cover that they suggest you grow alongside flowers such as blanket flowers. However, the National Gardening Association seems to be of the opinion that it is technically a weed. What do you think?

How about both? All weeds are groundcover. Groundcover can be anything.

In my book, yarrow is a native wildflower.

But on the same hand, so are dandelions. And so is thistle, and I hate that stuff with a passion.

  • When I think of groundcover, I think of something less than 6" tall.  Yarrow (at least all the kinds I've seen) are tall.  Yes, they get big & thus cover a lot of area, but it's definitely more in the perennial category in my mind.
  • Both like the pp said.  Unless it's invasive I'm fine with spreading plants as long as they are in areas that I can keep them somewhat contained.

I got a yarrow plant for free from our garden sale (they give away all the left overs to members at the end of the day).  It died.  I don't think it got enough sun.  The problem is I don't have any full sun areas which it likes.

  • LIke pp, I think of groundcover as a low plant, and yarrow doesn't fit that category.

I dug a bunch of yarrow out of our city park because the city was treating it like a weed.  They were too happy to have someone remove it, and I was happy to get a bunch of free plants.  They're starting to bloom now and are beautiful!

  • A tall perennial that I don't love except in well-done applications, otherwise it looks leggy and weed-like.
