Cactus-proof gardening gloves?

We were talking about G&L over on D&R and I figured I would  post my question!

Can anyone recommend a pair of weeding or gardening gloves that are cactus-proof?

I see the big spines, but there are some of those sneaky little suckers that you just don't see and they kill when they get stuck inside your glove in the cracks between your fingers.

I've looked in our local stores but haven't seen anything offhand that seems like it would work.

Thanks!

All I can say is good luck with that honey! I've never found them.

I'm convinced this is why people don't plant cactus, because it's certainly spectacular when it blooms.

  • We have a lot of sticker bushes around our property (working on getting rid of them).  I haven't found anything that truly works.  The best I've found are really thick leather gloves -- work gloves, not the pretty thin leather gardening gloves.  Make sure that they are all leather -- not leather on the palms and canvas on the back of the glove because you still get stuck.  I've been using the washable split leather gloves that are kind of rough.  (I think I got mine at Walmart but Home Depot also has them.)

I've tried the "rose" gloves and they're nice because they come further up your arms, but they tend to have thin leather around the hands and I get stuck.  If you could find a thick leather around the hand with a long gauntlet, that would probably be ideal.

But be prepared to still get stuck every now and then.

  • Try going to a big box hardware store they have lots of different kinds of work gloves including ones that you aren't supposed to be able to slice through (if they don't have all the gloves in one area check the ductwork area).  Puncturing would be different but maybe they have some for those too.
  • I've never handled cactus, but I do pull up thistles on a regular basis.

Pretty much any leather glove will work.

If you are talking about Menards, then I probably work for the company that manufacturers these.  Some of the cut resistant ones have Kevlar coating on them.  I'll wear 2 pairs when working with my cactus.  One that fits my hands and then another pair that is bigger.  It's not easy to maneuver but it's defintely better than getting pricked!
