H came home with a mophead hydrangea

Hydrangeas are one of my favorite flowers. We live in an apartment and will for another year. I do know I'm supposed to keep the soil consistently wet but I have some other questions about its care.

How long can I expect it to live in a pot?

I live in Houston, TX so our weather is very hot in the summer, it's been high 80's for weeks now. Should I put it indoors or outdoors or a mixture of both?

What, if any fertilizer should I use?

How should I water it? One article I read said to put water in the drainage pan, place the pot on top and let it soak up water from the bottom up and then empty the pan once the top of the soil is moist.

Any and all help is appreciated!

It could live in a pot forever, but the pot needs to keep getting bigger. How big is the pot now? Can you immediately repot it into much larger pot? That would help a LOT, it would hold moisture longer.

I water with a shower-type breaker, and focus on drenching the soil until it is thoroughly saturated and water flows freely out of the bottom of the pot.

You should keep it outside in indirect sun, in a nonwindy location. If you can't repot it right away, you can water it while it is sitting in a pan or tub of some sort, and let it sit in the drained water overnight, then take it out in the morning when you go to work, and repeat this every day or two AS NEEDED (Hydrangeas wilt when they need water). A small pot will probably need to be soaked every day.

  • The pot now is, I'd estimate, about 7 inches deep with a 7-8 inch circumference. I do have a pot that is bigger that I can repot it into.

So basically, keep the soil moist, repot it as it grows larger and indirect sunlight. I think I can not kill this thing. Thanks for your advice!
