Diva cup anyone? Possible TMI

Does anybody use the Diva Cup? I loved mine before having kids, and rarely ever had any problems with it, but I'm really struggling now. I threw my old one away when I got preggo with Jeffery, and replaced it with the after-30/post-babies. Only problem is I just can't seem to get it to "seal," and I end up leaking badly. I'm wondering if I need to try the smaller size again. It just doesn't feel like it fits over my cervix well. Any advice?

Really? I think we've talked about way more TMI stuff than this on the board.

No advice for you, cakenbake, as I've never used one.

Lol, I was thinking the same thing. I only put the TMI warning out there for anyone who didn't know what it was or was squeamish.

  • We've talked about the Diva Cup before on here. I think there are a few ladies that use it and might be able to offer some suggestions. I think there's also some ladies on H&F and Green Living that use it also. I don't think talking about feminie hygiene is TMI by any means.

Agreed. I can take a lot, but any sort of reusable feminine hygiene product grosses me out. Ick!

  • I've honestly never heard of it. I had to ask Devon what it was, so it was a bit of a shock to me!

  • I had never heard of it until we lived in Europe. Once I got over the initial "ew" factor, it has been awesome! But then again, I do FAM for birth control, so I'm not bothered by stuff like that. I just like not having to use tampons and pads and crap.

Oh, and it's cheaper too, Wink

Thanks for the help though, I think I'm just going to try the smaller size again and see how it does.

  • I don't really think it's TMI considering a lot of things we discuss. I had to go look it up though. It's certainly an interesting concept...not sure I could do it but still, interesting...

  • I use the Diva cup and I love it. It's so much more comfortable than tampons. I feel like I have fewer "oops" moments with it, and I never get stuck somewhere having forgot an extra tampon. We have a septic tank at home so I can't flush tampons, so I also love not having a trash can full of used ones. I've gone on weekend backpacking trips with it and loved not having to pack out used stuff. In general, I really like the fact that I'm not creating lots of waste, and the nerd/number loving part of me enjoys being able to see how many ounces I have each day. I feel a lot cleaner with it, actually, and you don't get that dry icky feeling that comes from tampons.

Anyway, that stinks that yours is leaking. Trying the smaller size again sounds like a good plan. Apparently there are other brands too that may work better, but I don't know how much buying/experimenting you want to do.  I hope you can find a solution!

  • I do think it's so much better for the environment, but I just don't know if I could get over the initial/potentially lingering ick factor of it.

  • I like mine also because it preserves natural CM that tampons soak up, so I feel like my periods are a lot shorter. But, I haven't had one yet post-baby. I thought the purpose of the larger one was to form a seal in your vaginal walls, not necessarily around the cervix, so the larger one should work better than the smaller one at this point. You may just need to do some kegels after insertion to help grab onto it.

If bodily fluids ick you out, sure, the Diva Cup is not for you. I always was a heavy bleeder though so my periods are going to be gross regardless of what I use. It doesn't bother me at all.

  • I use one and LOVE it. But I'm like DP, and my periods are going to be gross regardless, so I'll take the savings and the added convenience and comfort.

I'm sorry you're having issues with yours. I second DP on the kegels, but it also might not be a bad idea to research the other brands and see if another type might work a little better.

  • I use one too and love it.

Make sure you are spinning it all the way around once it is in. If it doesn't spin freely, the seal hasn't been created. Also, make sure the holes aren't plugged as that can kill the seal.

GL and I hope you get it to work!

  • Thanks ladies! I'm ordering the smaller one, as my GYN office just suggested it too. I've tried everything, all the tricks, and it just won't seal up. The GYN thinks I'm just petite and need the smaller one. Thanks for the input!
