Re: Infant daycare...
I don't know if it's regulated. But I don't think people who work at a daycare should be allowed to smoke. I don't want that shiit anywhere near my kid.
I've had 2 family members hold her a little bit after smoking and she was handed back to me smelling like cigarettes.
Admittedly, I'm a little nuts about smoking.
I'm always hearing about the ratio issues from my friend. As the director, she leaves her office and gets in the room to make sure they are in ratio if a teacher is needed. She even does this when one of the teachers need to leave the room just to go to the bathroom.
I think if you have a good director the ratio issues are taken care of. If her DM walked in and saw her sitting in her office while one of the rooms was out of ratio she'd be in big trouble. She also has to call and report to her DM if there is a crazy day where maybe 2 teachers call out or one is on vaca and others call out and she can't get the rooms in ratio. The DM tries to pull teachers or a director from another location and juggle them.
I wouldn't feel comfortable going to a daycare where this type of protocol wasn't followed.
I have to imagine this is regulated. I mean, it has to be, right?
I am super, super twitchy about this as well. I don't get smoking around kids at all.
And ditto what Shannon said about the Directors and the daycare. I have noticed the Director's initials a few times for one of Baby Numbers bottles -- she pops in from time to time to cover bathroom breaks and lunches. Our center also has a few floaters who go room to room.
the director and assistant director are always helping out, which at first made me think, "wait, they don't have enough teachers?" but then i realized that they do it so that they're never off with the ratio-someone goes to the bathroom or takes a break, and they come in. Also, I like that they get to know my kid.
That said, I just ran over there b/c I forgot to send cereal with him, and I think one of the teachers had stepped out into the office and left one teacher with 5 babies. They were all sitting in the awesome feeding table (that has chairs IN the table) so they were fine, but I got a bit...twitchy for a second about that.
But ditto Amy, at the end of the day, baby is happy, and he's being taken care of and loved. AND they are rocking with the solid foods-they've gotten him to eat 3 times a day.
