Okay ladies I wasn't going to do a garden this year because well, the deer and bear will probably eat it before I can, but a friend grew ALOT of stuff from seed and gave me the extras, so now I'm doing a garden.
Our soil is all rocks, so it has to be a raised garden bed as I don't have years to prep the soil properly. I've been gardening my whole life, just always in the ground..LOL.
So, my question is how big should I make my beds? I was thinking 4 to 6' by 3'.
I have tomatoes, carnival peppers, jalapeno peppers, another kind of pepper I forget, eggplant, beans, squash and cucumbers. And herbs, but those are going in pots most likely.
Re: Raised Garden Beds?
What's your arm spread? I made some of my beds 4x6, but I find the ones that are 3x8 much easier to reach the center. Be sure to leave at least a foot between your beds to give you room to do your maintenance.
As for fitting everything in... you might want to do a square foot garden. Gardener's Supply has a pretty nifty design program (free) that you can play around with and figure out how big your beds need to be to fit all you want to grow.
Remember to stick something in there to attract pollinators. If you don't want to give up the space for flowers, you could trail nasturtium over the sides.
"The meek shall inherit the earth" isn't about children. It's about deer. We're all going to get messed the fuckup by a bunch of cloned super-deer.- samfish2bcrab
Sometimes I wonder if scientists have never seen a sci-fi movie before. "Oh yes, let's create a super species of deer. NOTHING COULD POSSIBLY GO WRONG." I wonder if State Farm offers a Zombie Deer Attack policy. -CaliopeSpidrman
IMO it's up to you. Mine was 4x4

It depends on your bed placement. If the bed is going to be out on the open and you can access it from all sides, 4 x 4 is supposed to be a good size according to the SFG guy. If you're placing the bed up against something, I would not go deeper than 2 or 2.5 ft. I have a raised bed against our shed and it's 3 ft. deep and I cannot reach the plants in the back row without stepping into the bed (which you should avoid because it compacts the soil). Basically, you never want to have to reach more than 2 feet.
Okay, glad I asked, you ladies made some great points.
Space isn't an issue, so I can spread them out and make them as big as I want really (or as small). I just wasn't sure what would be appropriate.
Thanks for the tips about putting a pollanator in there, I probably wouldn't have thought of that until it was too late!
