shade-friendly flowers for boxes on the deck?
I want to plant some colorful flowers in boxes on my deck, but they will only get 3 or 4 hours of direct sun a day (if that) due to all the trees & the height of our house. If it matters, they would get sun around 11 a.m. - 2 p.m.
Any suggestions of what would be best? I've looked at begonias and impatiens, but could use some more ideas--I'd prefer flowers that are available in blue/purple or white, plus some fun greenery.
And what happens if I plant a sun-loving plant in my shady location--will it die, or maybe just not produce as many/as big flowers? I've seen a lot of "full sun" flowers I like, but don't want to kill them (or waste my money) if they don't have a shot at surviving in a shadier spot.

Re: shade-friendly flowers for boxes on the deck?
Impatiens are my favorite annual that likes shade, and the size would be right for deck-sized planters.

Where are you looking for annuals now? Try going to an actual garden center for more variety. Fuchsia, coleus (foliage), New Guinea impatiens (bigger blooms than standard ones), lobelia, torenia, and caladium (foliage) would all be good annuals to look at. Full sun plants will die, wilt, bloom less, or just plain look bad in the shade. If they are full sun to part shade they may do OK. Try writing down some of your favorites and doing some research at home. Often plants aren't necessarily labeled correctly (ie they just say "full sun" instead of "full sun - part shade") especially at the temporary big box store garden centers.
Either way there are a ton of great shade annuals you can pick from!
How big are the boxes? Are you looking for annuals or perennials?
Perennials that do well in the shade include solomon's seal, hosta, heuchera (some fun folliage colors and many are evergreen), and ferns. You could fill the boxes out with flowering annuals like impatiens, alyssum and lobelia.

Sometimes I wonder if scientists have never seen a sci-fi movie before. "Oh yes, let's create a super species of deer. NOTHING COULD POSSIBLY GO WRONG." I wonder if State Farm offers a Zombie Deer Attack policy. -CaliopeSpidrman
How about pansies or lobelia? Also, I think geraniums will tolerate part-shade (I definitely wouldn't put them in full shade, though).
If you're thinking about perennials, hydrangeas would be a lovely choice (buy the variety that is hardy in your zone, however).
Those are really cute! I stopped by a local garden center tonight and found some good stuff, but didn't see these. Might have to try to hunt them down somewhere.

I was looking more at annuals, that way I could try something different each year. I did see some lobelia tonight, I might go back for them. Hydrangeas are on our list for the front yard next year...we miss the ones we planted at our old house.

I found mine at my local Lowe's.
