I know that you have mentioned several times that you use AMEX so much. I've been thinking about signing up for an AMEX card and switching from using my debit card to using a CC for everything every month & just paying it off each month.
So what AMEX card do you have?? How much is your average annual rebate (if you don't mind sharing)? Do you find many places that don't accept amex??
I'm looking at the Blue Cash Preferred:
- $100 cashback after spending $500 in the first 60days (that'd be easy)
- 6% on supermarkets, 3% on gas/dept stores & 1% on everything else
- $75 annual fee
The annual fee is offset by the $100 rebate for the first year & then after that I don't mind paying the annual fee knowing that I'd get so much back in other areas. spending $200/month in groceries a month alone would give $144 rebate.
ETA: another question. Do they change their % of categories (like annualy or bi-annually) or is it pretty consistent??
Re: mcvay & other AMEX card users
I think mine is just blue cash.... I dunno, clear with the blue box in the middle.
I don't think I have an annual fee.... it starts at 0.5% for everything and 1% for gas and groceries (non-club stores like costco). When you spend 6k it goes up to 1.5% for everything and 5% for gas and groceries. I get up to that pretty quickly because matt and i both have cards on the same account and we charge everything we possibly can. Most of my purchases are gas and groceries so it adds up. I think last year we got around $500. We have always been charge it and pay it off each month, so instead of doing it with my capital one card, i just do it with this one.
I have run into a couple places that don't take AmEx. A few around here, but mostly outside the metro area in smaller towns. I do still have a MC in case of that, so it has never really been a problem.
HTH
I don't have an annual fee either. Maybe talk to them and try to get that waved. I had to look up my percentages. And I am not at 5% for gas anymore. I am at 3% for gas, 2% for food, groceries, restaurants , 2% for travel, flight, hotels, etc and 1% for everything else.
Last year our rebate was $600, but we went on two trips and DH has a diesel truck.
I am debating about starting to charge my mortgage...my friend does every single bill on her credit card and gets free flights all of the time.
I have only run into a few places that do not accept AMEX, it's usually smaller mom and pop shops. My debit card is a MC, so I just use that instead. But most expensive purchases can be made on the AMEX
We have the Costco Amex no annual fee aside from the the Costco membership. We get our rewards payout at the first of the year I believe, originally I thought it was quarterly but 1st of the year is fine with me as well. At the moment I can't remember exactly what our rewards are percentage-wise.
We have just started charging all of our gas and groceries on it, that small amount has been quite an adjustment for us (or me), and I pay my balances off quicker than I need to just because.
I have this same card, although it's not offered to new customers anymore. This card was replaced with the one you're looking at or there's one with no annual fee, but lower reward amounts
Ok I just looked it up and it is 5% on gas, groceries, and drug stores.... 1.25% on everything else. I am up to almost $400 and I don't get my cash back until August, so I should be able to earn at least another $200.
And it is called the Blue Cash card
thank so much ladies. I'm going to talk to DH tonight about it.
I looked up our utilities & it sucks that they don't accept AMEX (only visa & mc), that for sure would be nice. I'll have to check into the mortgage to see if we can charge that.

yeah none of mine take it either, so we don't use it (I do online banking instead). we literally earn that money on gas and groceries.
I have this card too thanks to Shelly. I use it all for my corporate travel, but have been trying to maximize the perks like shelly does by using it for gas and groceries. I don't get nearly as much back as she does even with all of my work travel b/c she uses it right. I was talking to H about maybe switching to the delta one b/c free luggage and the perks even if we traveled once a year would be more of a rebate then I currently get with the cash back card, but who knows. I do really like the card we have though right now, it was the best value at the time
I didn't think you could pay your mortgage with a credit card! I will have to check into mine. That would be AWESOME!
I have the Blue Cash card, but don't use it much and I am not sure why. We use a Citi Thank You Rewards card. I earn points for every dollar. We used our points to get our flights for Phoenix, but you can use your points for just about anything: cash rebates, electronics, travel, gift cards, etc.
I have this too. I just cashed in my points for $435 worth of Home Depot GC's to get a new patio set.
I like this card but the rewards are better than the cash back option. If I would have done that I would have only gotten a $300 account credit for the same amount of points.
