Planting an herb garden

Hello all. I was just curious what type of herbs do you currently have planted? I want to start my own garden, but I don't know what will do well here in South LA... Also any suggestions are welcome on how I should get started.

Re: Planting an herb garden

  • Hi there, welcome!  Where are you from?

Well my husband tilled the soil and in my herb garden I have a few basil plants, parsley and thyme.  The thyme and parsley are really thriving, as are the basil.  But the basil usually starts dying out around the fall.  The thyme and parsley even survived the freeze and they're HUGE!  My husband also planted asparagus in my herb garden, I'm not sure why, but he doesn't expect it to produce until next year.  (he planted it last year).  Rosemary would be another good choice.  I want to do mint, but I hear that it can be really invasive.  My mom suggested if you plant it to plant it in a very big pot with rocks or something at the bottom, so the roots can't "travel" and take over your yard.

  • I'm from Denham Springs. I definitely want to plant basil, parsley, and mint. But I am up for anything. I have never been one to garden, and I would like to plant a vegetable garden (but I am waiting until we build our next house). So I figured I could start with something small like an herb garden that can be taken somewhere when we move. Thanks for the input!

  • Green onions, parsley and basil are the easiest.  MH does mint in pots sometimes.  You can also do tomatoes & peppers in pots.  Peppers grow really, really well.  So do the grape & cherry varieties of tomatoes.
