Half birthday?

Okay, so I'm trying to figure out what to do, and hoped you guys could help.  DH turned 30 this past February.  I had a whole big surprise party planned for the weekend following his birthday (birthday was on a Wednesday).  The party was planned for Sunday afternoon, and my grandfather passed away on Saturday night.  He was very, very sick (had cancer) for the week leading up to his death, and by Thursday afternoon, I was so stressed out, I cancelled the party.  So, now to my question.

I had already paid for the cake, and was planning on rescheduling the party for shortly thereafter.  So the bakery and I worked it out where they gave me a credit for the amount of the cake to use for a future party (about $30).  Well, things got crazy for a little while after grandpa passed, and I couldn't reschedule the party.  I feel really bad now that DH never got a big deal made out of his 30th birthday (a big one), but he said it's not a big deal, especially since it wasn't something I could control.

So, I'm trying to think of a fun way to acknowledge his birthday, even if it's really late.  He'll be gone most of the summer with an organization he works for, so I was thinking of maybe doing something in August for his 1/2 birthday.

Any thoughts/suggestions?

ETA: The cake credit isn't the only reason for wanting to throw him a party.  I was just using it as an example of how I already have some things still in place for a party.

Re: Half birthday?

  • If you want to have the party go for it!  I wouldn't think it strange as a guest.

I will say that I don't really see the big deal over not having a 30th bday party.  I'd be inclined to take my credit and get a cake for just the two of us.  Then sit in a hotel room and eat it all weekend.  That's just me though.

Thanks!  We usually don't have birthday parties for eachother, but a bunch of our friends wanted to get together for his birthday (several were going to be in town that weekend for different things), so I decided to plan a party.  I'm not sure how many people will be able to make it if I have another one, so I'm really loving your idea about a hotel room and cake.
