My adrenaline is pumping... I have (had?) this divorce case, we filed it here in NJ in an effort to keep/get the kid here. Problem is, NJ doesn't really have jurisdiction over the kid because she's spent most of her life in the Dominican Republic with mom, who's in school there. We represent dad.
NJ judge said no jurisdiction over the kid here, but yes jurisdiction over the divorce (cause of action, alimony, child support, equitable distribution) since dad lives here.
Dad decided to just dismiss the NJ case and re-file in the DR because (he's kind of an ass) child support will be cheaper based on DR cost of living rather than NJ cost of living, alimony will be nil, and the DR says only property IN the country is subject to equitable distribution. All his assets are in NJ, not the DR, so DR won't give her any. And they're fairly substantial - he makes $350k/year.
Mom, of course, wants case to proceed in NJ where she can get a piece of the pie.
I drafted a stipulation of dismissal, which he signed yesterday, and my boss called the other attorney to give her a heads up and make sure she hadn't yet filed an answer & counterclaim for mom. She hadn't. But wants to so case can stay here.
So I had to literally race to the courthouse this afternoon when we found out their position, while they raced here with the answer and counterclaim, and file the stip of dismissal before they filed their docs.
I won.
I still feel jumpy from it, and I have a hearing starting in 3 minutes on a different case. Breathe, Riss, breathe.
Re: Drama!
Yay! So, they'll dismiss the case or you don't know yet?

Winning! I hate having that high feeling only to have to move onto something mundane again.
We've had to do a lot of hustling lately because 3 of our reps quit and the CEO made then leave that day rather than carry out their hearings for the rest of the month. So all of a sudden we had to switch reps, and most of the time they're literally walking into the hearing with paperwork to switch reps that same day. It's a little crazy!
