World Market furniture quality?

We are considering a sofa from WM. The price is comparable to Ikea, but WM is local to us.

I have read some less-than-glowing reviews on Ikea furniture, so I am wondering if anyone has experience with WM's? I'm not looking for a 30 year piece or anything, but 5-7 would be nice.

Thanks :)

Re: World Market furniture quality?

  • We've had our bedroom furniture for almost 4 years and it looks like it's brand new. The drawers still operate fine.  It's pretty sturdy stuff.  I love it!

I am BUMMMMMMMED they closed all of the World Market stores in Minnesota.  :-(

  • I think the wood furniture from there is usually good for the price - it is mostly solid wood.  Most of the upholstered furniture looks cheaply made.

  • We just got our WM coffee table in and L.O.V.E. it!  DH and I are huge furniture snobs and it comes with a pricetag!  But our coffee table was a steal at $250 including shipping and it is sturdy and looks beautiful!  I can't speak to upholstered quality, but thus far, my experience with them has been great!

  • Cant' talk about sofas or chairs, but I recently bought a entryway table and that thing is very sturdy and heavy.
I'm not crazy, I've just been a very bad mood for the last 40 years!
  • I can't comment on inside furniture, but we purchased an outside umbrella/dining table made from eucalyptus and the slats started warping after less than a year.  We used our lumpy table the 2nd year, but it was totally unusable for the 3rd summer.  We just started pricing teak tables for this year.  Yikes!  Wish we'd just got a better one originally.
  • We bought an outdoor table (wooden) in mid-July last year and put it away in early October... By then it looked 10 years old:( I am very dissapointed with the outdoor furniture and won't be purchasing again.

OMG we must have the same table! Ours has slats as well! What a bummer. It does look better once oiled it but that obviously did not do anything for the warping.

  • Can't speak to their upholstered furniture, but our dining room table and chairs are great quality.

I am really happy with our Ikea Ektorp sofa, though :) Ikea can be hit or miss, but some of their upholstered items do hold up really well. I've seen a lot more positive than negative reviews of their Ektorp line.

Ha!  Good (or bad, I suppose) to know we're not the only ones!

  • very good quality--all of the pieces we've gotten are great! dining room table and chairs are 4 years old (chairs are upholstered--holding up great, so i have no idea why pp thought upholstered pieces were not good, in addition to the wood pieces). we also have a media center and chest of drawers in the master bedroom and they are both awesome and have taken the beatings in the lower regions our little 14 month boy has been giving them for the last few months. finally, we have a couple of great leather cube ottomans that are awesome (great for style storage the little toys that Preston has in our family room/loft area).

  • Love World Market! We just bought a dinning room set from there and love it. The upholstered items seemed a bit uncomfy to me so make sure you thoroughly test them out before buying! Happy hunting! :)

  • Ditto here! It says to cover it or take it indoors during inclement weather so I put it in the garage over the winter, and it all dried up and the wood split and warped. . . It's a huge waste of money. Only lasts one summer.

  • I can't say enough how much I LOVE World Market.  A year ago we moved into our first house and we didn't have much furniture and I didn't want to spend tons of money.  After shopping around for months we discovered World Market.  They had the style I wanted and the right price!  I've purchased a book case, buffet, daybed, and two dining room chairs.  I've loved EVERYTHING! World Market has a lot of items that remind me of Anthropologie, but at a better price.

    Happy Shopping!  :)
