Anxiety

Does anyone have anxiety and anxiety attacks? How do you deal with it? Are you on medication, etc? What causes you to have anxiety. I have anxiety and am wondering if there are others  out there and some ideas of what to do to cope, etc.

Re: Anxiety

  • I recommend making an appointment with your doctor.  Everyone's anxiety is different and can be treated in many different ways.  Usually Xanax is the first med they will put you on.  I also recommend seeing a therapist, especially if you don't want to get on meds right away.

  • I have anxiety medication and see a therapist. I was just seeing if other people out there had anxiety, what they do to cope, etc.

  • Talking to your Dr is probably a great place to start. And I personally would recommend seeing a therapist. I have had the best results with meditation. But that's just me.

  • I have "situational anxiety".  It's solely related to visiting the dentist.  I have tried to handle it on my own for years, but without success.

I finally talked to a doctor about it and was prescibed Xanax to take as needed.  That just happened and I haven't tried the medication yet.  We'll see how it goes.  I'm paranoid that the combination of Xanax and nitrous will kill me, but my nice doctor has assured me that's not the case.  Smile

Anyway, ditto those who suggested talking to your doctor.

  • I have an anxiety disorder, but it is not related to panic attack type symptoms.  Instead I compulsively pull out my hair.  It sucks.  I've had it since I was 12, and to this day have only grown my hair out so I could wear it without either a wig or a scarf once in my life.

Grand Rapids has a great resource:  The Anxiety Resource Center.  They have support groups for things like general anxiety, panic disorders, OCD, body focused repetitive behavior disorders (what I have), and social anxiety.  They are right downtown between founders and GR Ballet Co.  It is worth looking at their website.

Otherwise, find a doctor within your insurance who can help you.  General practitioners are a good start, but someone really skilled in treating anxiety disorders is even better.  Sometimes GPs don't understand the subtitles of  different medications or treatment programs the way a psych professional would.  Also, the most recommended treatment these days is a combo of Rx meds and behavioral therapy, and a general practitioner doesn't have the therapeutic background to be most effective.
