I like all the expensive plants...

and rocks and just about everything else garden related, *sigh*

I"ve found a really nice Acer orange dream (Japanese maple) I want. Its colors are so pretty

I love that its not typical. I don't like typical plants, our other trees are Linden and black gum. Everyone else usually plants maples or garbage smelling pear trees.

I just wish things weren't so much money! that's my complaint for the night

Re: I like all the expensive plants...

  • I know how you feel.  If it helps, last time I was at Sam's Club, they had gorgeous Japanese maples for $130. (They were indoors, if you go to look).  Wasn't in my budget, but maybe it's in yours.

  • I totally know what you are talking about!  My recent dwarf conifer addiction is costly.  Luckily I offset that with a lot of free plants last year from garden club members.  Or at least that's how I justified it in my head.  Stick out tongue

Are you looking for a particular area or just some different plants to add around your yard?  I know they aren't the same but these cost a lot less:

Tiger eye sumac are cheaper but they need full sun for the bright colors.

  • you & me both sister.  I try to balance cheap, common, fast-growing plants with expensive specimens and free plants off freecycle.

japanese maples are hella pricey.  do you think it will go on sale at the end of the season?

When I bought my house (1995), I remember having difficulty accepting a $50 price tag on an Elegantissima Boxwood. Those were the days!

    Surprise

I also indulged my affinity for certain species (Hydrangea and Japanes Maples) to the detriment of my tiny garden. If I'd known THEN what I know NOW, I would have made different purchases and had more diversity within my limited space.

  • I hear you.  I'm trying to commit to more planning, less impulse buying.  And I like the more unusual (which often are the more spendy) plants as well.   It's so easy to get caught up in it!  Japanese maples are lovely-- my mother is always trying to talk me into buying one.  For flowers and veggies, I'm also talking to neighbors a lot and we are sharing seeds and dividing plants to give to one another as well.

  • It's definitely worth it on some plants. However, I've found paying more for an older, better established plant just seems to lead to a plant that has a harder time acclimating to new conditions. Especially since I have clay, many times it's better to start small.

"The meek shall inherit the earth" isn't about children. It's about deer. We're all going to get messed the fuckup by a bunch of cloned super-deer.- samfish2bcrab

Sometimes I wonder if scientists have never seen a sci-fi movie before. "Oh yes, let's create a super species of deer. NOTHING COULD POSSIBLY GO WRONG." I wonder if State Farm offers a Zombie Deer Attack policy. -CaliopeSpidrman
