Dear Community,
Our tech team has launched updates to The Nest today. In addition, The Nest community member's avatars will be replaced with generic default avatars. If you wish to revert to your original avatar, you will need to re-upload it via The Nest.

Thank you.

Tell me a little about Relay...
Re: Stephaniem...
Relay For Life is the American Cancer Society's signature volunteer-run event. Usually held at high school tracks or similar places for 24 hours, you need teams of 5-15 people so someone can be walking at all times. The idea is that cancer doesn't stop so you don't either.
Relay is very community oriented and inclusive - it's for all ages.
Relays usually take on a carnival type atmosphere, as people bring tents and set up "campsites" and sell things or experiences at their tent sites to raise money. Relay planning committees also run events and entertainment. At mine we have a DJ all day, live bands, musical chairs, Relay pong, face painting, magicians, water balloon toss, themed laps, change wars, and a craft for kids.
Teams are encouraged to hold pre-event fundraisers for their teams, as well as to raise money on event-day. Every year pre-event my team does a Tastefully Simple online party (hostess doesn't get gifts, all money goes to Relay), MFD guest bartends and donates his tips, and we do a team flea market. On Relay day we do changes for chinese auction baskets and we sell cancer jewelry that one of my teammates makes. This year we're also offering wine glass painting.
Relay is unique in a few ways:
1. Money raised at your Relay does not leave your area. It does not go nation-wide to people you don't know. It funds programs for people with cancer right where you are.
2. Relay raises money for ALL types of cancer and is not specific to breast cancer, leukemia, etc., like other walks.
3. Relay celebrates survivors by having any survivor present make the inaugural lap around the track followed by a reception in the survivor tent; fights back by raising money before, during and after the event; and remembers those we've lost with a luminaria ceremony as soon as darkness falls. Relay's motto is CELEBRATE - REMEMBER - FIGHT BACK.
Do you have one in your area? It really is a great event, and a fabulous way to get kids into community and charity early.
