Northeast ladies- What state are you in.....

and when do you plant seeds outdoors?

Do you think I could do it now? Our area is not technically out of risk for frost, but it is highly unlikely beyond this time of year.

We are in VT, but a lake effect area, so it is warmer here than most of the state. We usually plant first of June, but really want to do it now.

Re: Northeast ladies- What state are you in.....

  • Im in NW NJ, but I went to college in VT..

I still haven't put my plants/seeds in the ground where we are in NJ since we are in the mountains.  When I lived in VT I always waited until Memorial Day weekend.

Although, it also depends what you are planting.

  • I'm in southern NH and the rule of thumb around here is also Memorial Day for setting out annuals. However, seeds can be started earlier, depending on what you're planting.  It takes them a little while to germinate and poke up into the frost danger zone.
  • I'm in central Maine and I have planted some seeds...I bought started tomatoes but I bring them in at night. I also have my annuals out already but I might need to start taking them in because it's down in the 40s again here.

You can also look up your zone and see what it recommends.

  • I'm in RI, we were having a good stretch and I direct seeded carrots and peas in mid april, and transplanted lettuce broccolli and kale at the same time, a month before our safe time. It worked out great and I'm harvesting  the greens now!
