I just signed us up for the Dam to Dam 5k (our first one!!), and honestly have never felt more motivated in my workouts. Maybe I am more goal oriented than I thought?
Anyway, I'd like to get kind of a line up of future races in mind to keep this going. Maybe by this time next year I can be a skinny runner? Any recommendations for great, fun races? My main criteria include finding races that aren't overly competitive (as I would most likely be walking half the course) and I would prefer those that give out medals to the finishers. Seriously, I want medals. Oh, and free drinks post-race.
I checked out the Fitness World website for suggestions, but it looks like every small town in Iowa has some kind of 5k run - I want recs for the best ones!!
Re: Do we have any runners on the board?
I'm a slow chubby runner
http://www.fitnesssports.com/races.html - but it looks like you already looked at it, there seem to be some good ones in the fall, I think I'm going to sign up for the fallen solder run, for my friends Husband. And sometimes all the fun little town ones are the best /fun ones
I don't think I'll be here for Dam To Dam, but if you ever want a run buddy let me know
My favorite race last year was the Remembrance Run 5k. You don't get a medal, but you do get dog tags and its an amazing cause. It was a good race and the prayer and remembrance beforehand had most of the crowd tearing up. http://www.iowaremembrancerun.com/
Thank you! I couldn't find it
Maybe when I'm actually doing more running than walking! #teamfatass
Keep up the great motivation!!
I have not done this one but I have had friends who have done this one and would do it again for the T-shirt! It's hard to find 5 and 10K's with a medal but you can do it for the shirt?! http://www.fitnesssports.com/juneraces/Clive_Fest/Cliveinfo.html
This one is in the fall, I think they have stopped timing this one but I am not 100% sure, I have been out of the loop the last year with being pregnant... http://www.beaverdash.org/
The DSM Marathon has a 5K as well. http://www.desmoinesmarathon.com/
Let me know if I can help with anything else!!
Good luck!

It isn't a 5k but the living history farms off road race in November is fabulous. It is seven miles across creeks and up embankments and there is a lot of walking because it gets pretty backed up at the creek crossings. I didn't think it was bad at all and I was not running more than 3-3.5 miles when training for it.
I really like SCAVMA scamper in the spring as you can bring your dogs and I enjoyed the Jingle Jog in Ames in December. It was in the evening and just a fun flat course through ISU campus.
