how to start a vegetable garden in my lawn

Hi I am researching how to start my vegetable garden.  It seems I have 2 options of either digging the sod out or doing a no dig type of garden.  My husband and I are not handy so I would not know how to build a raised garden bed.  Just wondering if you can offer me advise as to how you have started your plot for a vegetable garden.  Thanks!

Re: how to start a vegetable garden in my lawn

  • I've done the dig the yard/rottotill and I will be honest, it sucks.  Plus the soil isn't usually garden ready, so that requires more work.

In my new house we are doing raised garden beds because the ground is all rock.  I'm builing my raised beds, but you can buy them from places like Gardener's Supply http://www.gardeners.com/ .

You should also consider doing a container garden.  I always grow a few things in containers... herbs, tomatoes, peppers and i've done eggplants too.

  • We just built a raised bed last weekend for a vegetable garden.  One to start with and we hope to have three someday.  Last year everything was in containers on our patio and that worked out well so we've expanded :)
  • Honestly, digging out sod REALLY sucks. I just spent 10 hours digging out sod in a 10x10 area of my front yard. I was sifting the dirt clods before I tossed them though, retaining a lot of the soil, so it took awhile.

Raised beds aren't that hard. You just need 4 pieces of wood, a saw, and nails.

  • We bought a raised garden bed kit from Lowe's this week.  It came with a trellis too for tomatoes, etc.  We got a 4x4 to start since it's our first time planting.  I'm anxious to start as soon as the rain goes away!

  • My husband and I have been at our current house a little over two years. Our first summer we dug up a section of our yard for a garden (it was awful- we had one of those hand tiller things) and getting it started it didnt do great. Last summer and this summer we invested in an actual tiller (great craigslist find!) and it has been much easier and so far we have been able to grow things just fine!

     Good luck! :)

  • Grass will choke out anything you plant very quickly, so it's important to get rid of it thoroughly. I would clear the area around where you're planting too.

Raised beds are easy to build. You don't even need a saw if you use the dimensional lumber or ask the Lowe's guys to cut it for you (for instance an 8ft board into two 4ft). You can find how-to videos on youtube.

Sometimes I wonder if scientists have never seen a sci-fi movie before. "Oh yes, let's create a super species of deer. NOTHING COULD POSSIBLY GO WRONG." I wonder if State Farm offers a Zombie Deer Attack policy. -CaliopeSpidrman
  • My husband is the most un-handy person on Earth and he was able to build a raised 4x4 bed in under a half hour. We got the wood cut to the right dimensions when we bought it, like PP said, so the only work we had to do was drill in the deck screws. Easy peasy.
