Natural Gas question

Anyone have their home tied into natural gas recently through National Gird ?- I'm looking for a ball park hook up cost so I can start budgeting the change over, I'm in Cranston - although it probably doesn't matter, I do know we have gas on our street.

Re: Natural Gas question

  • we did in Nov 09.

it was $800 to bring the line in, and I forgot what the burner cost us - I did get it through NG

  • All told it cost us about $8000 - the hook up was about $800 but you have to get the furnace installed within a year (I think) or that goes up to like $2400 or something.

Yep, that's pretty  much what they told us.  We didn't think we could swing the furnace right away, and just wanted to do cooking - and i was told it was $2400 if we just did it that way.  Ugh!  So, we still have oil heat and electric cooking.  Boo.

The person that gave us the quote for the furnace part said that heating cost would probably be about the same with gas vs. oil.

This was pretty true when we switched over (comparing brand new oil to brand new gas), but not sure how it would add up now, since oil has skyrocketed.

  • I'm in MA, but we looked into it and the final figure was about $7k.  And we already have gas in the house.  It was mainly the cost of the burner and the labor for a plumber (you have to contract a licensed plumber to do the work) to install it.

  • Thanks for the input.

I'm fortunate that my FIL is a licensed pipe-fitter he works for a heating / AC company so the install would be free and the furnace would be at cost, but $800 for the hook up doesn't sound too bad.

We're having a new roof put on next weekend - so my budget is taking a hit, trying to get an idea of heating change over, hoping to time it for the fall - before the next heating season.
