TarHeels (or anyone with shrub/rose help!!)

HELP!!! :)

I've been searching and searching trying to figure out my plan for my porch front. I thought I had it figured out doing an Emerald Gaiety Euonymus evergreen in the back and then the carpet roses in the front. But after going back and looking at the rose information I'm seeing that they will be pretty much the same height as the Euonymus - not good. Plus, between the two of them, our bed would be reeeeally deep, deeper than what we want.I did post below asking if you could trim something back to keep it smaller than it could be - could I do that with the roses??

Any suggestions as to how we can get both in there?? I fell in love with the Emerald Gaiety: it's an evergreen with a leaf that turns pink in teh winter!!! How awesome is that?!? I just don't know what to do.... Any suggestions??

Thanks!!!

  • Also, the site i'm looking at says the Emerald Gaiety can be up to 4 or even 5 feet if allowed to climb. We do have those pillars on the porch edge. You think that would encourage a taller growth?

Emerald Gaiety is not as pretty as they make it sound in marketing.

I have seen some plants develop a FEW HINTS of pink. While most every plant looks great in the store, it isn't a stellar performer in the landscape, and it's not a plant I suggest to clients, because it's so hard to find attractive examples of it (I find it ugly).

  • NB, I don't mind Emerald Gaiety since its leaves are sort of pittosporum-ish and I dearly love that plant.  It's Emerald n Gold Euonymus that I think is horrific.

Have you seen the roses in person up there?  I find it's always nice to see the plants you're considering together.  Create a little mini-bed in the plant aisle :P  The reason I ask is because I think certain colors of the roses might look better with a solid green backdrop instead of variegated.

Because the eu. gets 4-6' wide and the roses are 3-4' wide, I agree 10' is a very deep bed.  But have you taken a measuring tape out there and seen how 10' looks from the street?  I use old magazines as place markers for space planning - just drop them on the ground to get an idea of the space.  You can also mark the ground with any spray paint you have lying around.

One of your posts mentioned letting the euonymus climb up porch columns.  Here's how eu. looks when it climbs. To me, while it's pretty, it's more of a back porch look than a front porch look.

If you love the eu. that much, just have it be your only plant in the bed and maybe edge with monkey grass or annuals.

  • Thanks for the help!!

We went plant shopping yesterday and ended up with Emerald and Gold for our shrubs (I liked them slightly more than the Gaeity Confused ) and then picked out an assortment of perennials to go in front. I made a chart and drawing and I'm hopeful that I got a good mix of blooms to last from spring to early fall as well as different heights. It's totally trial and error at this point since I don't know much, but I'm excited. It will also be cheaper than doing ALL annuals every year, which is definitely a factor for us. Although I do plan on getting a few to fill things in for a few years until stuff fills out.

I also got Green Mountain Boxwoods to put on either side of the stair railing as you're coming to the front door and have a few perennials surrounding them. The left side might look a little bizarre this year since the bed will continue into our old shrubs for now. :(  Next year I will replace the shrubs with a different evergreen and then put some of the roses in front of the window.

I DID find some great carpet roses at my local nursery that were in bloom and were BEAUTIFUL (the ones at HD and Lowes weren't bloomed out very well or look very healthy)! I loved the amber the best :) so I can't wait to get them next year. I'm glad, thuough, that they didn't work out in front of the porch. Somehow I forgot about the thorns (how do you do that??) and that would not be a good combo with that patch of grass since we grew it with hopes that it would be a good playing area for the kids. So that turned out rather well in the end. I will just miss seeing those roses this year.

Thanks SOOO much for all your help!! I really enjoy having this board to ask a lot of my questions!!!
