Canna lilies -- any luck?
Hey all,
I tried planting canna lily rhizomes about a month ago, in a raised bed (almost like a mini-retaining wall) right next to my house. The spot faces the sun all day and I needed something tropical there -- hibiscus flourished there last year. I've tried other "full sun" plants there and killed all off except the hibiscus-- it gets seriously hot in this corner.
However, I'm not seeing any sign of the cannas yet, and I'm getting worried. We've had several nights in the 40s since then, and I know they like it to be consistently above 50, but wouldn't they be making some sort of appearance by now?
Has anyone tried planting these before, particularly in zone 7 or even chillier? How long did it take before they sprouted? Any suggestions for me?
TIA!!!
On a TTC journey since March 2010 that is making me more appreciative of life and love.

Re: Canna lilies -- any luck?
I'm in zone 8 and my cannas are just starting to come up. IIRC the first year they were a little slow to come up. Watch for slugs, they'll eat them down to the ground.
If your planting is a complete failure Home Depot and Lowe's usually have them for cheap around July. Often they'll have multiple shoots so you can break them up and spread them around a little. I've found they multiple readily so it didn't take much to get a pretty healthy looking stand.
It's so nice to get such a bright tropical looking plant in a cool weather area.

Sometimes I wonder if scientists have never seen a sci-fi movie before. "Oh yes, let's create a super species of deer. NOTHING COULD POSSIBLY GO WRONG." I wonder if State Farm offers a Zombie Deer Attack policy. -CaliopeSpidrman
I grow cannas in z7. I planted them last year, so I'm still waiting to see how many survived their first winter. They began emerging in April, and they are now about 5-7" tall.
I haven't had slugs attack them (and I have plenty of slugs), but my microclimate is a bit warmer than the surrounding areas... possibly even a zone 8 in this particular neighborhood.
