4th of July Luau??

H and I host a huge 4th of July party every year - themed around fireworks, as H put on a show in the field behind our house at dark.  Last year H was injured badly by a firework and is just about fully recovered.  We want to celebrate his recovery with our annual party, we think it will be great to party will our family and friends that were there during the accident and there for us through all the hard times this last year.

My question is, if you were invited as a guest, would you think its lame to attend a Luau themed party for 4th of July?  I love themes but want to stay away from fireworks as there will be nothing more than sparklers.  I know I could go with a basic red, white and blue theme but that seemed kinda boring. I will be having the party on the 2nd so that still leaves the holiday open for firework festivities for those who wouldn't want to miss out on that.

Re: 4th of July Luau??

  • My DH does fireworks as well (actually does them for NYE, friends' weddings and the 4th) and I just read him your post to remind him again to be careful!

Well, Hawaii is a state, but I think I'd be a little, "oh, wait, what? ok."  There's no need to switch from a patriotic theme just because there are no fireworks.  Home fireworks are illegal in many states, so millions of Americans only celebrate with sparklers anyway.  And after all, the reason there's a holiday at all is because our nation declared its independence that day, so red, white and blue isn't boring.

DH's aunt has done a HUGE 4th party with about 50 people for about 15 years.  She never did fireworks until four years ago when DH got into them.  Instead, it's classic games like kickball, water balloons, badminton, kids on the trampoline.  The younger relatives are in charge of cranking the ice cream machine.  Guests bring an assortment of homemade fruit pies, barbeque chicken, sides.  If it weren't so damn hot here then, it'd be my favorite holiday!   It's a blast because the guests make it one.

PS - Walmart right now has a million water games supplies in their front display.  DH already stocked up on water guns to give to the younger kids :P  (And we totally know it: the older "kids" too ;) )

  • I didnt quite feel veering away from doing red, white and blue and guess I should stick with that instinct.  I love the tropical/Hawaiian theme so maybe I will try to find red hibiscus decorations to incorporate a tropical feeling.  I live in IL so I think I just long for the tropics!

As for fireworks- I am now so against them.  I know this isnt quite the board to preach on but I cant help but tell people not to light them.  My H was taught how to do them by a professional (they were 3" mortars and illegal where we live but he would get them anyway) and he had the whole set up to do them properly but still got hurt.  We had about 60 people over (children included) and everyone witnessed the firework blow a hole through his forehead.  We didnt know for a week if he'd even live.  It was nothing he did wrong- just a firework that misfired.  This happened to another man in the next county over on NYE- only his hit the neck area and he died on the scene.  Try to talk your H out of lighting anything big!!!!

I am glad to see someone who was for them now being against them for home use. Not glad that YH almost died.

There is a bill in my state legislature now that will legalize some fireworks for amateur/home use. Now only sparklers (the metal and the paper ones) are legal. No fireworks, no rockets. I hope it doesn't pass. Enough people die in the state every year pouring gas on a bonfire, fireworks would be a disaster.
