Victoria, BC

Anyone from/been to Victoria? DH and I are planning  a weekend there in August and wondering if we really need to bring our car with us or if public transportation is available and things are walkable.  We are staying downtown near the harbor.

The city of Victoria is easy to get around in by walking.  The only thing to consider is if you're taking the ferry across it is a ways from the ferry to the city.  I've never tried to take transit from there, so you might want to look into that.

As for things to do - there is a lot going on at the harbour, street performers, vendors selling some neat souvenirs, there are also lots of restaurants and patios.  When DH and I were last year, we went to the Devonian Gardens (outside of the city), but other than that spent most of the time around the harbour.  It's a beautiful city!

  • The harbour area is beautiful and definately walkable. Like pp mentioned it's a way from the ferry to downtown. You can transit but it takes a while.

Depends what your looking for but the museum is pretty good and has IMAX. And you could always have afternoon tea at the empress.

DH and I like Vista 18 for brunch and the amazing views.

    ENJOY!

  • From victoria.. you are fine if you are staying down town..  Butchart Gardens is  a must do.. and you can access it via transit as well! the Royal BC Museum is awesome.. bring your walking shoes..

bctransit is the operator of the transit system.. and vic info is on their website..

    Have a great trip!

  • My Man and I go to Victoria every summer! We drive down through the mountians (We are in Northern BC).... It is amazing!

Definately all walkabe if you are staying downtown.  The Harbour is really neat!  The  Undersea Gardens is right in the harbour, its a bit pricey for the size, but really neat to go underwater and see the set up they have down there!  They offer a scuba show as well that is pretty neat!  The Harbour itself it beautiful, lots of shops and walkways to explore! It's pretty cool to see all the lavish cruise ships coming in from all over!  You must stop in at Barb's Place (Fish n Chips) -- wild seals come up to the docks there and people feed then (even though they aren't supposed to!)  They are neat to see!   Along the dock by Barb's there are house boats that you can walk by, literally houses on the ocean!  There are some pretty amazing ones there, something definately worth seeing!  (what a neat way to live!)

Also in the area is Miniature World, The Vistoria Bug Zoo and the Royal London Wax Museum (a creepy must-see!).   And you must stop for Tea at the Empress Hotel! (Even if you don't like Tea, it's quite the experience!)  You have to dress fancy for it, so fun!

As another poster said, Buchart Gardens is a must!

I hope you have a blast in Victoria, it is such an absolutely beautiful city :)  Let us know how you make out! :)  Have a great vacay!!
