Anyone directly affected? It's such a tragedy. I can't imagine being in that firehouse in Butte LaRose hearing that news.

Re: Flooding
I agree with Ali, that is the reason that the floodway was built, so not opening it and allowing major cities to flood would have been really dumb. It sucks that those people will have to go through that, but....that's how it goes when you build in an area like that!
Not flameworthy because it's true and I think I even read that when they purchased their land, they had to sign something from the federal government stating that they were aware of the consequences. But I do sideeye the blase attitude. That's no different than people in other parts of the country saying that they didn't feel sorry for anyone affected by Katrina since they chose to live in a city below sea level. All of the above is true but it doesn't make it any less terrible. Hundreds of people are losing everything they have ever known so that people like me can keep our homes. IDK...for me, it's very humbling.
MT, what are you talking about? What happened in Butte la Rose?
I do agree with this. It's really sad for the folks who are flooded out, but as much as I hate to say this, I'm very relieved they opened the spillway. The people who live there were given ample notice to evacuate, whereas for both NOLA (they SO didn't need another disaster) and BR, if something would have happened, this would have been absolutely terrible! The very levee system in the NOLA area that is supposed to keep water out in a hurricane, would have essentially kept water IN from a river flood. I couldn't even imagine.
