Flooding

Anyone directly affected? It's such a tragedy. I can't imagine being in that firehouse in Butte LaRose hearing that news.

Re: Flooding

  • I have a good friend from LSU whose entire family lives in the area that is expecting 10-15 feet of water. It is very sad, but (I may get flamed for saying this) the majority of the people bought there after the spill/floodway was built know what it's purpose was. I can see opening it to help big cities like BR and Nola where the damage would have been much much worse. One of the flood maps predicted upwards of 40' of water in New Orleans if the Morganza wasn't opened.

I agree with Ali, that is the reason that the floodway was built, so not opening it and allowing major cities to flood would have been really dumb.  It sucks that those people will have to go through that, but....that's how it goes when you build in an area like that!

  • Not flameworthy because it's true and I think I even read that when they purchased their land, they had to sign something from the federal government stating that they were aware of the consequences.  But I do sideeye the blase attitude.  That's no different than people in other parts of the country saying that they didn't feel sorry for anyone affected by Katrina since they chose to live in a city below sea level.  All of the above is true but it doesn't make it any less terrible.  Hundreds of people are losing everything they have ever known so that people like me can keep our homes.  IDK...for me, it's very humbling.

MT, what are you talking about?  What happened in Butte la Rose?

I do agree with this. It's really sad for the folks who are flooded out, but as much as  I hate to say this, I'm very relieved they opened the spillway. The people who live there were given ample notice to evacuate, whereas for both NOLA (they SO didn't need another disaster) and BR, if something would have happened, this would have been absolutely terrible! The very levee system in the NOLA area that is supposed to keep water out in a hurricane, would have essentially kept water IN from a river flood. I couldn't even imagine.

  • oh I'm not indifferent to what is happening to them.  I think it is awful when anyone loses their homes or livelyhood.  I know for DH and I, it's probably something that would take a LONG time if ever to recover from and I feel for them.  I just hated reading people's comments about how stupid it was to open the spillway and make those people lose their homes, when that is the reason it was built and they knew that.  But I do feel for them and pray for them.
