Bummed, deer ate my roses. What to do next?

I got up this morning to find the bloom off the (hybrid tea) rose...and likely in the mouth of a deer. I have since sprayed the bushes with deer deterrent, but I was wondering if there was something else I should be doing to promote growth?

Re: Bummed, deer ate my roses. What to do next?

  • Well, if it's a rebloomer, the good news is the deer pruned it for you. If it blooms again toward the end of the season, it was a rebloomer and you didn't need to deadhead ;) If not, it should put out some vigorous growth and look gorgeous next year.

I would keep with whatever fertilizer cycle you're doing regardless.

Sometimes I wonder if scientists have never seen a sci-fi movie before. "Oh yes, let's create a super species of deer. NOTHING COULD POSSIBLY GO WRONG." I wonder if State Farm offers a Zombie Deer Attack policy. -CaliopeSpidrman

I'm sure if I told my dad he would offer to come over and kill the deer.

  • I'm pretty sure I remember reading somewhere that deer don't like marigolds and that they can be used to keep deer away. Can you plant some, or even put some in pots, near the roses? I'm not sure if it will actually work, but it might be worth a shot!

  • to me, it's heartbreaking that wild animals habitats are encroached upon by developments, then we complain that the deer ate my hybrid tea rose and let's kill it.

    hmm.

To me, it's heartbreaking when someone drains the fun out of a joke.

I've heard that as well...may be worth a shot. Thanks.
