Anyone been to Niagara Falls?

We are going to a wedding in the Finger Lakes in July.  We are going to be there several days and want to go to the Canada side of the Falls.  Anyone been?  How much time should we allow to see it?  Is Maid of the Mist worth it or is there another boat tour?  Are there good restaurants or other things to do around there?

Thanks!!!

Re: Anyone been to Niagara Falls?

  • I live near Niagara Falls (about 40 minutes away in a suburb of Buffalo), so I've been there many times.  The Canadian side has the "better" view that you're used to seeing in pictures, but is very touristy and has lots of cheesy stuff like wax museums.  I like the American side better as it's a state park so it is more nature focused.  The cave of the winds attraction on the American side is really awesome.  I'd recommend that over the maid of the mist (which you can do on either side).  You can also get a pass to do all of the attractions.  Click here for more info on things to do in the area.

I've never been to the American side, but the Canadian side is pretty cheesy.  That said, the view is wonderful and likely worth the trip.

Also, the butterfly conservatory on the Canadian side is pretty cool.

  • We went on our drive out to Chicago.....it is definitely cheesy but the views are awesome. The Maid of the Mist to me is worth it at least once.  I was scared to death but I hate boats LOL so it was me hugging the pole most of the time.  The Cave of the Winds is incredible.

  • Thanks ladies!  I've never heard of the Cave of the Winds so I am definitely adding this to the list!
  • I've only been to the Canadian side.  It is touristy, but I like that sort of thing.  We liked Maid of the Mist.  We got a bus pass that would allow you on and off the entire time we were there and I think it included the admission to many different attractions.  We went to Ripley's Belive It Or Not museum too.  I liked it.  If you have AAA there are quite a few attractions that you get discounts to if I remember correctly.
