Need 4th of July getaway recommendations

DH and I both have off the whole weekend for once and want to get away.  I know it's going to be crazy anywhere we go, but any suggestions?  It doesn't have to be the beach, but somewhere with a beach or pool would be awesome.  But it's not a requirement.  It should be within driving distance somewhere.  Any thoughts?  NJ/DE/MD?  I am stumped here.

Re: Need 4th of July getaway recommendations

  • maine its under an hour and half flight. love it
  • Maybe just book a nice hotel in Philly with a pool and a good view of the fireworks from the roof?

The Shore is such a damn mess on the 4th.

Agreed.  Traffic alone can ruin your weekend.  What about Gettysburg or someplace historic for the 4th?  I'm sure they have pools in the nicer joints there!

LMAO!!!  I'm trying to come up with a plan stat because they have already been asking what we are doing.

Staying in the city isn't a bad idea, the hotel with a pool makes it sound appealing. But sometimes you need to get out of the concrete jungle.  I'm feeling one of those weekends but I get that the traffic could be insane.

Gettysburg is kind of interesting. Hmm.. I'm going to keep thinking along those lines.

What about the Canada side Niagara Falls? Have you ever been?

Hmm, I have... back when I was a senior in HS.  I don't really remember any of it though.  Oooh, that could be romantic. Kind of like Jim & Pam's wedding :-P

  • How about the finger lakes in NY? I have no idea how far away that is but I hear it's nice.

  • St. Michael's, MD is ~ 2 hrs away.

  • The finger lakes was going to be my recommendation. Larger hotels probably have pools.
  • I hear the Hotel Hershey, in Hershey, PA is supposed to be really nice.
  • Oooh Hotel Hershey. Mmmm.  I was there once and absolutely loved it.  I bet it's lovely in the summer.  A Gettysburg/Hershey trip could be really fun.  Hotel Hershey just can get super pricey, I'm curious if they jack up the rates even more during the 4th.

And the Finger Lakes was our first idea since I went to school up there.  It's still not out of the question...maybe I need to plan an itinerary and visit more than one lake since I only know Cayuga.

  • I love drinking in the finger lakes.
  • New Hope, PA is a great spot for a couple of nights, and some of the B&Bs have pools.  We are getting ready to book a room at Pineapple Hill for November:  http://www.pineapplehill.com/  I was just on their site last night, and the prices seemed reasonable.

This past fall we did the Canadian Niagra Falls...what a tourist trap!  Niagara on the Lake was much prettier.

There is a could I work with who stay at Hershey every 4th of July weekend. VERY pricey, but they love it and claim it's worth the cash,

  • I know someone suggested staying local and I just saw this on Uwishunu and thought of you. It lists hotels in the city that have pools and categorizes them by rooftop, luxe and location.
