Hi, ladies. I don't normally post on this board, but I really need some advice, and thought that this was a good place to come for it.
So I am a teacher and currently really love the school that I work at. However, it's an hour drive to my school, which adds up to 2 tanks of gas per week. A school literally 3 minutes from my house had an opening, and I decided to apply for it for several reasons. It's a great school with tons of professional development opportunities, and it's linked with the university and high school I graduated from, so I am familiar with it. The school is so diverse and unique, too. The reason I applied is not at all a pay thing, but more of a time thing.
Well, I've made the final cut and they need to contact my references. My current school does not know that I am looking for another job, but giving how far I drive every day, I don't think it will be a gigantic shock. But I need to talk to my current principal tomorrow to let her know otherwise I will no longer be considered for this new position.
I don't know how to tell her that I've gone on an interview and made the final cut. Deciding to apply for this other job is honestly the most difficult decision I've made in my life because if you could transplant my current school about 30 minutes closer, I would not even be considering leaving. I just don't know what to say to her tomorrow, and I don't think I can talk to her about it without crying. Any advice would be helpful. Thank you!
Re: References Question
Do you know what "the final cut" means? Does that mean 10 people or 2 people?
I was in a similar situation last fall and had to give my boss as a reference. Of course, my boss didn't know I was looking. I told her that it truly came down to the fact that the commute was taking almost 2 hours out of family time each day, and the new place would only be 5 or so minutes from home. It was the truth, and she understood. Of course she won't be happy - and I've give her a day or so to get over the initial shock before the new place calls for the reference.
If "final cut" means more than 2 people though, I'd be hesitant to give the principal as a reference. Maybe a close coworker instead?

I asked if they wanted a coworker that I teach closely with or someone else, and they said that they would prefer an administrator. Since I teach at a very small school, my principal is also our superintendent; I don't have a department head to use as a reference, as I am the only language teacher in my building, so my principal is the only administrator I can give as a reference. I know that the "final cut" is no more than 4 people, as that is all they interviewed in the third round.
