Need one more dish for a "shower" type get-together

And it's right around the corner!  Please help!  (As in, we just decided to do this and planned it for next Saturday!)

It's not technically a meet and greet for our newest LO - more just an opportunity to get our families together to celebrate her ;)  So, it's last minute and low-key - but, of course, I still want it to be nice.  I'm trying to think "girly" type foods since our newest addition is a daughter.

I have a few ideas for sweets and drinks, but I need help with the other dishes.  I was thinking of just ordering several dozen tea sandwiches from a local "ladies who lunch"-type place that does awesome work.

Then, I saw this recipe for "fruit, cheese, and herb skewers" in a magazine and thought it looked cute.  Maybe even just do 2 or 3 varieties, instead of all 4?  Also, it says they can be assembeled up to three hours in advance, but I'm really not sure why they couldn't be made the evening before and stored in the refridgerator (thoughts?)

I really think I could get by with just one more "bite"-type dish (in addition to the sweets), but I have no ideas.  We'll be outside, so it would be awesome to not have to use utensils.  I'm thinking something crunchy would be nice, but I don't know what.  Extra points for something that can be made a day (or two!) in advance, or that I could order or purchase.

Thanks ladies!

Re: Need one more dish for a "shower" type get-together

  • I would be concerned that the berries would get mushy or the juices would run onto the mozzarella.

A little bit different thought.  What about doing a pasta salad skewer and a watermelon gazpacho?  When I do pasta salad skewers I cook tortellini and toss in Italian dressing while still hot.  Let the pasta cool then start threading with cherry tomatoes, black olives, hard salami, and the pasta.  When done marinade the whole thing (keeping the ends you pick up clean) in Italian dressing overnight.  I also like to sprinkle on extra Italian seasoning.

The gazpacho could be made ahead and served in shot glasses or other small glasses.

Deviled eggs would be another option you can make ahead.  If you want to jazz it up a little you could put different toppings on them- bacon, smoked salmon, salmon roe.  I would top the day of though.

  • buffalo chicken dip, doesn't take long, can be assembled the night before and baked in the morning, or assembled within 5 mins.

    2 cans (12.5 oz) chicken

1 8oz block of cream cheese

1/2 C blue cheese dressing (or ranch)

1/2 C of franks red hot sauce

1/2 C of shredded mozza or blue cheese crumbles

put the cream cheese in a casserole dish, zap it in the microwave for 30-60seconds to soften it. drain the chicken. mix all ingredients together in the casserole dish. bake at 350 for 20 minutes.

serve with tortillas and/or celeery sticks

  • I don't have a suggestion but I wanted to say that the fruit skewers are a nice idea which I will be stealing!

    Good luck!

  • I'm a big fan of tea sandwiches in situations like these.  Egg salad, nutella with strawberries, or smoked salmon are always popular.  They're small bites, people can pick them up w/o a plate, etc.  Here are my fave smoked salmon ones:

and there's also a recipe for tomato-goat cheese puff pastries on that link--super easy and a crowd-pleaser!
