Officially introducing myself (many small PIP, better to follow later)

So now that I've been lurking on this board for a week, I figured it's time to introduce myself and show off the beginnings of my project.

I purchased my home two summers ago, and due to some major family circumstances, just recently started the remodel and landscaping. The home was built in 1920, and features all the original interior woodwork and leaded glass windows. The exterior, on the other hand, was a complete mess, neglected and destroyed by the past 3 owners of my home.

Due to the need to complete several major remodeling projects on the interior including a complete re-wire of the electric, a new master bath, and a complete kitchen gut, my landscape budget is more or less nonexistent.

I live a fairly "green" lifestyle, and I enjoy the challenge of making the most out of what I can find or what I already have.  I grew up in the country on a farm, so gardening and landscaping is not new to me, but starting from scratch is.

With all of that being said, here are some teaser pictures until I can find my USB cable for my camera. Sorry about the size, chrome won't let me resize images.

Day 1:  (sorry for the quality, it's a picture of a camera screen- I didn't get a cell picture that day)

Day 5 (Day 3 was rainy, Day 4 I moved 3 cars full of sifted topsoil)

I'm in the process of sifting out and amending the last bit of the soil for the first two beds, planing the last few plants I have already purchased, going to a neighborhood plant exchange on Saturday, and building another brick bed along the side of my house.

My current cost breakdown:
1000 bricks- $80
45 plants from craigslist- $18 (some are being traded this weekend and the plant exchange)
8 plants from home depot- $16
Top Soil- $5
Gas to pick up craigslist finds- $48.50
Total cost so far- $167.50

I know it's not much compared to most of you, but this weekend was the first time that my house really felt like a home, and I'm pretty proud of it.

Re: Officially introducing myself (many small PIP, better to follow later)

  • Congratulations! I really love the brick. I think the beds are going to turn out great.

No idea on what the Craigslist Shrub might be, sorry.

"The meek shall inherit the earth" isn't about children. It's about deer. We're all going to get messed the fuckup by a bunch of cloned super-deer.- samfish2bcrab

Sometimes I wonder if scientists have never seen a sci-fi movie before. "Oh yes, let's create a super species of deer. NOTHING COULD POSSIBLY GO WRONG." I wonder if State Farm offers a Zombie Deer Attack policy. -CaliopeSpidrman

It was funny- the ad came up as I was putting the soil in, I jumped in my car, and drove across the city at breakneck speeds to get it.

The former owners cut down every last tree on the property. The back yard is nothing but a sand pit (old pool) rocks, and weeds, and the front was so terrible. I saw a big ole shrub, and I don't care if it blows nasty 3 seasons of the year, at least it gives the house a bit of character

  • I think it looks great!  I love brick borders.  They always look classic and don't get eaten up by lawnmowers like the black plastic edging does.

Gotta love free/cheap plants and plant swaps too!  Last year I got a ton of free plants from my garden club members and plant swaps (around here you don't actually have to bring something to swap if you don't have anything).  The only thing to be aware of is stuff that spreads like crazy or is hard to contain.  You can often find stuff like that at plant swaps because people always have plenty to spare.
