New, with a shrub question!

Hi everyone, I'm new here but I have a question. My DH and I just bought a house and we're working on some things inside and out before we move in, in about a month.

What do you think we should do with the boxwood type shrubs that line the front of the house? I was thinking about cutting them back/ trying to reshape them.  They kind of overwhelm the front of the house and they're all different shapes. I'd also like to get something else in there along the sidewalk, that's shorter, so there's a little bit of interest there... and it's not just shrubs.  Can we attack them now (zone 7b)? What's the best time of the year to do major pruning for this kind of shrub? Any suggestions would be great!

I think they should be cut back and reshaped. I'd try blending the two on the left together, and the four on the right together, and not give them such a strict form (more natural, using manual pruners). I agree they need something in front to step down in size, for added interest and some color/texture.

  • I don't really have any suggestions as I'm a landscaping newbie myself, but just had to comment after seeing you live in Cary, NC. My BIL/SIL live there! It's such a beautiful area! We wish we could be closer to enjoy all the beautiful weather and scenery!!

    You have a beautiful house!
