Yellow grass help??

We have yellow spots in our yard caused by our dogs urinating. Is there a way to fix this? It looks so bad and since we have a small yard I'm afraid before too long it's all going to look like that!

Re: Yellow grass help??

  • Don't fertilize your lawn.  It will make it worse.  When they pee, dilute it with water.  Other than that, I don't think there is much you can do.

  • Ditto to watering the pee spots afterwards to dilute it down.

Another thing you might try is training the dogs to pee in one specific spot in your yard, so at least you can just keep a watering can there instead of chasing them around the yard as they tinkle.

  • Yes water the spots heavily and they will become extra tall and dark green.  Long term you can also look into ways to reduce the nitrogen levels of your soil.  The excessive nitrogen in the dog pee is what is browning the grass.
  • Thanks ladies! I'll do this going forward. Any suggestions for making my already yellow grass look pretty again though for the parts where the damage has already been done?
