Just at VENT: Shocked and appalled!

Fair warning that I'm venting. I've been unemployed (voluntarily moved to join my fiance after he took a job in Chicago) since December and I'm flabbergasted at how employers are treating applicants. I've been doing everything right - I've had over 100 individual networking meetings, gone to 30+ networking events, applied for countless positions and had probably 5-6 interviews and I'm still not getting anything.

The vent today is by far the worst. I did five interviews with this company, including with a C-level person. The hiring manager offered me the job last Thursday and asked me to come in Friday to shadow the person I would be replacing. She assured me the offer letter would be there Friday for me to sign and my first official paid day would be Monday. Well, turns out no one gave this woman the authority to offer me the job. The C-level person I interviewed with actually said to me, "Why are you here? I didn't think we'd offered you the job yet."

So I was told by my new "supervisor" that she needed to smooth over some political stuff and she would talk to me Monday. She said, "plan on being in the office on Tuesday." Well, Monday she told me that the CEO wasn't in that day so she couldn't talk to him. And I haven't heard from her since.

I want the job, it would be a fantastic step in my career. But seriously, how can they treat someone this way? I've now spent over $1,000 on this interview process because I've had to rent a car to go out to their offices for every single interview and now have been renting a car for a week bc we were planning on buying a car once I got the offer letter.

So frustrated. I've been dealing with this company for a month now and have been assured the whole time I would be hired - so I haven't been applying elsewhere. And now, I might be back at square one again. On top of that, I told my family and friends I got a job because, well, I was offered one. Learned my lesson there! Don't say anything until the offer letter is signed. I just can't believe this is happening.

Sorry - vent over.
