What are your "extreme" political positions?
I don't know if we can keep this relatively light-hearted and try not to flame, but I thought it might make for an interesting discussion. If possible, give extremes on both ends of the political spectrum.
For me, my liberal extreme is my pro-choice position.
My conservative extreme is my view on crime. I have an almost inexcusably low level of respect for due process.
Re: What are your "extreme" political positions?
I'd call that extreme. And ITA with you.
I tend to be an 'everything in moderation' type of person, but my extreme position (and I think this is one where far left meets far right) is that polygamy should be legal.
No, I don't want to have any sister wives or any more husbands. Yes, Warren Jeffs is a total perv. Yes, abuse and statutory rape should still be crimes. No, I don't agree with the way it is often practiced, but the problems I have with the way it is practiced are separate crimes (rape, incest, abuse, abandonment, tax evasion, fraud, etc.). I understand Pgh's arguments against a polygamous society, but I still don't see it as the state's place to dictate which types of marriages are or are not valid (outside of the typical contractual condition that all parties are old enough to enter into a contract).
my read shelf:
I wouldn't say its a conservative view, well maybe classically conservative, not modern America conservative.
Anyhow, I am fascinated by the idea of a completely open and free global market for labor. Obviously you'd need some safeguards to prevent trafficking and gross human rights abuses. But I'd love to see it. I think in the long run it would be great for this country.
I also am far more of a free-trader (and when I say free trade, I don't mean making other countries open their markets while keeping our subsidies in place, I mean actual free trade) than either party. Some of the environmental aspects make me queasy, and I'd like to see some human rights protections, but I think protectionism only hurts our economy in the long run.
I favor nationalizing the major financial institutions. ?I'm not talking about the crap they're doing now, but having like Wachovia become the Bank of the United States (*waves to Andrew Jackson*). ?I'm also for single payer healthcare.
I also support gay marriage. I don't really think this is an extreme position, but neither of the Presidential candidates support it.
I think we should outlaw all handguns. Hunting weapons are ok, but there will be strict standards for licenses.
I don't believe in marriage as a government institution. ?I think the government should only recognize civil unions, for pairs of any sex combination. ?
I would abolish the electoral college.
Deductive reasoning isn't a conservative or liberal attribute. ~epphd
I would like to see our tax structure go to either a flat tax or fair tax
We need to re-do our immigration laws/proceedures - and then enforce them.
I would like to see a national service requirement - either military or community service - after HS - for 2 years.
Love this idea.
I do, too, but I'd just have it be community service.
Deatlh penalty (anti)
Separation of Church and state (pro separation past the bounds of the constitution)
I would do away with the current tax system. I would also abolish the 2-party system. Legalize marijuana and tax the hell out of it (I see $0 deficit due to this-ideal, maybe, but I do)
I am anti-death penalty. I would also abolish the Dept of Ed and give all power back to each state-as it should be.
Term limits? I am curious for this one.
My extreme left position is that I am against the Pledge of Alleigance. Not just the "under god" part, but the whole damn thing. I think its fascist. Practically forcing children, including 4 and 5 year olds who can't possibly understand what they are saying, to recite their love for their country every single morning? It freaks me out. I'm so not a fan.
Extreme right...? Hmmm...I'm against hate crime legislation, that's pretty much the one area where I agree with Republicans.
And I'm with mxolosi on the trade issue.
Oh man, where do I begin?!
First I ditto mxolisi on the real meaning of free trade and zoe on redoing our tax structure. I'll add to that: abolishing the federal dept of education which means all its rules/regulations & its money; get rid of the federal minimum wage; scrap the EPA and institute an environmental tax in lieu of current regulations; improve property rights - which might not sound extreme but I have ideas like getting rid of the endangered species list and instead letting private sector institutions/individuals own species; and I think government grants have debauched science and that the generic man-made global warming from our CO2 is the biggest hoax ever.
There's probably more but that's all I can think of right now.
Let's see...
Far left - I'm extremely pro-choice, meaning I don't think there should be any restrictions on a woman's ability to have an abortion. I believe gay marriage should be recognized federally, and not left up to the individual states (though I'm happy with several states now recognizing it). I do not believe the 2nd amendment gives individuals the right to keep or carry a gun.
Far right - probably immigration? I'm not of the "send the illegals home" mentality, but I also don't really support amnesty. I think the whole system is a cluster and needs some serious revamping, but I really don't know what we can do to fix the problem for those already here illegally.
Bunny, have you forgotten about PETA?!
Oh caden reminded me.
I used to be pro getting rid of the department of Ed...but after living/teaching here I am very pro nationalized Education. Its sooo much better! (IMO of course)
My right side isn't extreme...just consistant. I think thats why I get so confused on how to vote. The few left views I have are very passionate, but I have many right views.
ESF, you're right! I guess those are left, though. I'd impose serious regulations on factory farming and require the organic and free range labels to actually mean something, unlike what shittty companies like Horizon would have you think. I also would outlaw breeding cats and dogs, if we're playing when bunny rules the world.
Major, doesn't Congress already not have term limits? I actually disagree with you here. We don't need El Presidente for life.
I am beginning to think that the POTUS should not be allowed to be religious. Of course this is unenforcable and infringes on his/her rights - but I'd prefer an atheist!
Totally agree with abolishing the electoral college, and pretty much everything else the "liberal extremists" mentioned
Like BB I also do not have any extreme right views!
I am a runner, knitter, scientist, DE-IVF veteran, and stage III colon cancer survivor.
I think Americans shouldn't have guns - at all.
I think hunting should be illegal and we should find other ways to live with natural populations the biggest of which is bringing back natural predators.
I think castration should be a real punishment for several crimes and not just child molestation.
I think our sex education and outreach should be an extreemly high priority to get our teen pregnancies to a world low.
I think we should develop our animal welfare rights to include things like tax deductions for pet care, pet insurance, state-wide spay/neuter laws, etc. I also think that only certain animals should be allowed to be farmed/eatten and that there should be a path to increasingly limit the # of species allowed to be eatten/farmed/sold for meat as time goes on and our national diet (grocery stores, restaurants, etc.) is modifed to compensate nutritionally.
I think that our nation's farmland needs to become much more diversified crop-wise. thats not really a law i want its more so just an opinion, lol.
I think all people should be encouraged to have gardens and learn how to grow their own food so the average person knows as much about gardening as they do about their primetime TV shows.
oh - I also think the president should have 1 term of 6 years and can't be re-elected.
I like single payer health care... call it that or "socialized medicine", I'm OK either way.
I think street drugs and prostitution should be legalized, regulated and taxed.
I think community service requirements for voting are just a little Facist... a little too "Starship Troopers" for my liking.
I believe that we've ended up in the economic crapper as a direct result of the Reagan economic theories and tax cuts; that prior to the 1980's we valued labor and the middle class in ways we simply don't anymore.
I'm sure there's more.
I am the 99%.
I am with BB-no El Presidente for life so definitely need term limits.
I actually think there should be term limits on Senators and Congressmen (do like our fore fathers did--serve your term and then go back to your normal/real job--yeah, I am looking at you Byrd).
