Strawberry HELP!!!

I bought ozark strawberries...I thought I was buying 2 plants......never order on when children are present....I ordered 2 sets of 25 plants...

Can I put some in regular planters.  I do not have enough space in the bed I made but have lots of empty planters.

TIA

Re: Strawberry HELP!!!

  • Yes, they grow in planters.  But my experience is they do not grow quite as well as in the ground.

Okay good to know I will put as many as I can in the ground...Thank you
  • Wow holy cow!  I'm not sure about that particular variety but strawberries spread like crazy so plant them in a raised bed or some place you can keep them contained.  My MIL has them and they try to take over her veggie bed and lawn.  She's constantly having to pull up the runners they send out.

I will have them in a 4X4 bed and if I have to I will pinch the runners off....
  • Strawberry plants make a wonderful gift.

I was thinking the same thing. Many preschools, schools and churches teach children about gardening and healthy eating by having them plant a garden. If you wanted to share, I'm sure strawberries would be a big hit.

  • I bought 2 sets of 25 too. Plant them in the ground. They are wonderful.

I planted mine 4 springs ago. So far this year I've made strawberry short cake for 50, 2 strawberry rhubarb pies and 2 batches (20 jars) of strawberry jam. I also give my kids a bag of strawberries with their lunch everyday.

Use them as ground cover. In the spring they have beautiful little white flowers and then after the strawberries are done baring fruit they have nice green leaves that are close to the ground for ground cover.

2 plants would't have been enough. They would have only given you about 20 strawberries a season.

Where did you get the planters from, we would like to do plant some, and wanted to do a 4x8 just for strawberries!

  • I have about 60 plants throughout our front flower beds.  I love the leaves on them and how they spread.  I have done them in pots as well.
