Peanut butter...

Should I just do it?   I keep waiting for the "right time" - i.e., I'm not home alone with him, it's not after doctor's hours, it's not a weekend day when we have plans, etc.  But I don't want to keep prolonging it.   We've survived all the other introductions - strawberries, eggs, etc.  I'm most nervous about this one because my sister's boys are both allergic.   So how did you do it?  Just a little on a spoon or piece of toast or something?   And what does the reaction look like? Hives?  Hard time breathing? (which is what I'm most concerned about)    I have Benadryl sitting on the table just waiting....

Re: Peanut butter...

  • If you're ready just do it I'd think.I'd say just have him have a little lick of it. He may or may not like the stickiness of it. then, if he does try it on some toast.

I'm holding off until she's closer to two with peanut butter and shellfish. My brother is allergic to PB and I figure I'll jsut wait. I feel bad though while I'm eating my PB. Although, she doesn't have it too bad as she enjoys a mozz grilled cheese lol

  • I still haven't done it for those reasons... the boys doc wanted to wait until they were two, then we went on vacation, then Keaghan got sick so still waiting for the right time... it will be soon too!

  • Our doctor gave us the go-ahead at 1. My uncle is allergic so I was a bit nervous. Eli ended up having a little accidentally the first time (he took too big of a bite of food and was gaging, so I swiped my finger in his mouth to get it out before realizing there was a bit of PB on my finger from what I was eating.) No reaction to that, so we went for it after that. He LOVES peanut butter!

  • MJ also had his first encounter accidently when a girl at daycare shared her ritz/PB crackers with him, (just one) before my DCP could get to them, but he was about 9 months and everything was fine.  The new recommendation is 6 months, but we waited until a year to full out give it to him... he now gets PB&Js and PB toast and loves it... but we didn't have any history in either family.

Definitely understand the hesitation, maybe an early evening when you're both around, or a sat. morning so you can watch him all day?  Don't feel like you need to rush it, I'm sure he's getting an awesome variety with all the cooking you've been doing lately!!

  • You'd think after giving strawberries and shellfish for the first time on the same day (accidentally) I wouldn't be worried about it, but it's the last big allergen we have to do and I'm scared. I forgot to ask my office's recommendation on the matter, even though they're more old school (ie: we started eggs at 8-9 months and at 12 months they were all "You can give her eggs, now!") In my mind I know they say it's okay now and we have NO food allergies in our immediate family whatsoever, but it's a mental block for me.
