I've changed my name with the bank, credit cards, mortgage, car loan, etc last summer after DH and I got married. I am now realizing that I didn't change it on the house title and the car title. Did you do this? How did you do it? I've googled everything and called 3 different numbers where they all say they are not allowed to provide advice. For house, I know I need to go downtown to change it and car I can do at any of the service centers, but can't find which forms I need. Any help would be great!
Re: Name Change Question
My very experienced realtor said not to bother on the house (you still exist as that name.) I never changed my car title either and recently transfered it without an issue....been married 7 yrs.
So my advice is to not bother. Yay for less work ;-)
The single most important is the social security system! I've a district manager SS friend who said there are stockpiles of cash sitting around unclaimed because women go 25 years working with a mismatching employer name vs SS name. They're SHOCKED when they go to retire and the monies don't seem to match up. (Of course now SSA sends that annual report to help prevent that shock.)
I haven't bothered to do this either. I figure we'll get a new car in a number of years and worry about have my new name on there. As for the house, I checked with the county when I was in there getting my drivers license changed and they said that I would have to go through a lawyer or closing office to have the proper documents, like those at closing, written up. When I contacted our closing firm to ask about getting the paper work started they said that they could do that but it would was going to cost around $1100.00! Because you have to pay them for thier time and pay for all the fees to file with the mortgage company, the county, the abstract, and who knows what else! Then I heard from someone else in this siuation that if you ever refinance there is a form you can fill out at that time that requests a name change on the deed of the house. My name is changed on the loan for both the house and the car, but the title/deed is not.
eta: I guess I should point out that my account at the bank has my new name, but the mortgagee still lists my maiden name. However that works. But that would be what the closing firm would be able to get changed with whatever they file.
I just answered this on the knot side too today. I didn't change my house because it was like flushing $$ down the toilet. When I re-financed my mortgage, my husband needed to be added to it for legal reasons I guess so since we were already re-filing it, I changed my name then.
I never changed the title to my car either. When I signed it over to the dealership on Tuesday (yay for new cars!) I just signed my married name with "a.k.a Maiden name" immediately following. Figured that should cover my bases and if they need a copy of my marriage license, I'll mail it. Again, not going to waste the money to have them re-do it when it is easily remedied by showing them the marriage certificate demonstrating that me maiden name is the same as me married name.
