Help me solve this 5th grade word problem...
There are 490 fish total. Goldfish, Chichlids, and Swordtails.
There are 2x as many goldfish as chichlids and half as many swordtails as chichlids. How many of each type of fish?
Re: Help me solve this 5th grade word problem...
70 swordtails
140 chichlids
280 goldfish

Yep. I wouldn't even know where to begin on how to figure it out. Ugh.
I got what Michele got.
x = the number of chichlids
2x is the # of goldfish
1/2x is the number of swordtails
so:
x + 2x + (1/2)x = 490 (solve for x)
(7/2)x = 490
7x = 1080
x = 140 (number of chichlids)
and so forth.
I actually did it a different way, same result.
2x - chichlids
4x - goldfish
x - swordtails.
1x + 2x + 4x = 490
7 * x = 490
490/7 = 70 so x= 70, then plug that back in above (70 swordtails, 140 chichlids b/c that is 2 times x, then 280 is 4 times x).
no clue if i did it right or wrong but I got there ;-)

I hope this helps more than it confuses you! Ignore the 490 right now... We'll get to that later.
There are 2x as many goldfish as chichlids.
2 goldfish = 1 chichlid
and half as many swordtails as chichlids.
1/2 swordtail = 1 chichlid
but I've never seen a 1/2 fish swimming around, so I'll change the expression:
2 chichlids = 1 swordtail
So, knowing that... it stands that:
4 goldfish = 1 swordtail
since 2x chichlids = # goldfish, and there are 2 chichlids for every 1 swordtail
The smallest number of fish that this word problem could be talking about is 7.
4 goldfish + 2 chichlids + 1 swordtail = 7 fish
But, we have 490 fish! Now we have to figure out how many of each kind of fish we are really looking at. So, what do we have to multiply our 7 fish by to get 490? Or, what do we get when we divide 490 by 7? That is "x" ...
7x = 490
490 ? 7 = x
490 ? 7 = 70
So, we just solved for "x" ... x = 70! Now to work on how many of each kind of fish we have!
4 goldfish + 2 chichlids + 1 swordtail = 7 fish
4x + 2x + 1x = 7x
GOLDFISH: 4 ? 70 = 280
CHICHLIDS: 2 ? 70 = 140
SWORDTALS: 1 ? 70 = 70
Now, let's double-check!
280 goldfish + 140 chichlids + 70 swordtails = 490 fish
Yay! We did it!!
You should be a teacher Alicia!!!!!
