Daffodils?

I have a bunch of groups of daffodils in my one planting bed.  It was never taken care of, so I need to roto till it.  There are a few plants I'm going to save plus the daffodils, so I'm letting them stay "up" for now, but once I'm done tilling the crap out of the bed, what should I do with the leaves/stalks?  At my old house where I only had a few, I used to wrap them in rubber bands close to the ground.  Not sure why I think my mom told me to do that, but with these big clusters I have no idea.

Re: Daffodils?

  • yup you want to let the leaves die as the energy goes back into the bulb that way for the next season.

  • If you have big clusters, you can dig them up halve the cluster and use the bulbs elsewhere.  If daffs get too crowded, they won't bloom as well.
  • Some people braid the leaves after the flowers are gone to make them look more tidy.  The leaves build up energy for the next growing season.

  • Great, then I'll do what I did at my other house.  Thanks ladies!
