self-employed newbie here

Hi everyone, I am a newbie here wondering if any of you are self-employed and perhaps know of any good networking events coming up?

Re: self-employed newbie here

  • Hi there! I'm currently in transition, but thinking about consulting more than finding an in-house position at this point and I go to to tons of networking events.

For women, specifically, the two groups I would tell you to get involved with are the Professional Women's Club of Chicago (www.pwcc.org) and Step Up Women's Network (www.suwn.org). Both of these organizations have regular networking events that are fantastic. PWCC has their own luncheon coming up in a couple of weeks, but they also work with the Union League Club to promote other events. I'm going to a luncheon on June 1st at the Union League Club featuring Mika Brezinski from MSNBC.

For more events, I've done Chicago After Work Networking as well, a huge monthly networking event. Also, take a look in your field. I work in marketing and PR and follow PRSA and AMA as well as a few smaller women in marketing groups. Most of them have LinkedIn groups that list events, so I'm sure you'd be able to find some in your field.

But again, I reiterate, Step Up is one of the best networking organizations in the country, let alone Chicago. And PWCC is fantastic! Let me know if there's ever an event you are going to and I'll likely be there!

  • I'm not sure if you have already tried this, but Meetup.com has a lot of good groups that you can join for free and network with other professionals. I'm in a lot of groups there and have gone to some good meetups.
