I was in Aruba last weekend and when I was heading back to the US I was randomly pulled aside by customs for an inspection. I'm pretty squeaky so stuff like this doesn't bother me so I sat back as they searched my bag expecting to be sent on my way in minutes. Yeah... that didn't happen. The guy asked me to stay there and then called over a drug sniffing dog (who found nothing). But the guy seemed really suspicious so I finally asked if there was anything in my bag that was making him hold me and he held up my glass straw!
I was SO confused. I asked him why my glass straw confused him. He looked at ME really confused for a second and finally asked "What is this?" So I told him what it was, where I got it, and what I used for. He started laughing and said he thought it was a crack pipe. Now, I have no idea what a crack pipe looks like but apparently it looks like a glass straw! So, just a heads up, may want to keep the glass straw at home if you are traveling abroad!
Re: Glass Straw Airport Security Warning!

Just in it's box which is flattened at this point. Honestly, my Glass Darma straws are so strong and sturdy I imagine I could drop it on concrete and it'll survive! So I'm not worried. It's always in my purse and has been since Christmas time without even a scratch.
I could see this happening...
Where do you purchase your glass straws?
I get mine from Glass Dharma, though I hear Strawesome is great, too. But I KNOW that Glass Dharma straws are strong from personal experience.
Best sound ever: baby's heartbeat! (Heard @ 10w1d)
I've honestly never seen a crack pipe, whether in person or on TV but my fiance has. He said they are long glass tubes with a bubble on the end, but I guess there doesn't have to be a bubble? I don't know but the airport guy was VERY suspicious so I guess it looks enough like it to raise a red flag.
Interesting thing, though, there was a lighter in my carry-on suitcase still from out last camping trip and I didn't know it was there. I must have flown on 10 planes since our last camping trip and security never caught it! So my harmless glass straw raises a red flag, yet I can walk through security with a lighter almost a dozen times. Seems to me like they are being trained to look for the wrong things!

I've often seen glass staws used to smoke heroin on TV like so:
LOL! I get that all.the.time for the Chico reuseable grocery bag I have clipped to my purse. This isn't me, but you get the idea. Airport security, checkout lines, random people on the street. Everyone always asks me "What is that?!?" Their best guess is usually a reeeally small umbrella.
ETA: I just have to say, I freakin' love Google. It doesn't matter how obscure your search is, Google always finds it. I Googled "chico bag closed clipped to purse" and BAM! Third photo.
