Facebook and work people

I am thinking of starting a Facebook account, but afraid that work people will learn too much about me......not that I will place crazy photos or stories but I just like to keep a line up, especially with my direct reports.  Thoughts?   Anyone have any issues?

Re: Facebook and work people

  • I didn't have any issues, but we had an extremely laid-back office anyway (ie boss would send us on beer runs, we had a Ms. Pac-Man/Galaga console in our breakroom).  Easiest way to avoid that is to just ignore their friend requests if you get them.  I'd address it with them though and explain that you like to keep your personal and professional lives separate though so they don't get offended when you ignore the request.  They should be understanding.
  • I agree with pp... you can screen your "friends" so that anybody that you don't want to have access to your profile, won't.  You can also fix your settings so that only certain friends have access to certain parts of your profile (ie: work people don't have access to your personal pictures).  I happen to love Facebook as a way to stay in touch with old friends... enjoy!

I agree.   I have a "limited profile" setting that allows certain people to only few a small handful of photos and see only a portion of what's on my profile.   that way we can keep in touch, but they don't go learning way too much about me.

  • Thanks for the feedback ladies!
  • Just watch what you write. I would put up any personal information or write long complaints or tell dirty jokes with friends, etc. Keep it informal and basic.

I never give work associates my personal email or tell them I'm on Facebook. I keep Facebook for friends, family, etc, but strictly separate from work.

  • Facebook can be fun.  I have a pretty laid back work environment so have a few of my  "peers" as friends... but I am not sure that I would want to have my manager as a friend on there.  I do prefer to keep work a bit more separate and even with just peer coworkers as friends I still try to keep from talking about work.
