What soil to get for vegetable garden?

What soil should I purchase for a raised bed that I am starting.

Should I get the miracle garden soil for vegetables/fruit and a bag of compos (i.e. mushromm)? Or, an organic soil.

I am in Houston, Texas

I bought organic soil, peat moss, and mushroom compost for my raised bed. We have an 8x12 raised bed and it took about 30 bags of organic soil and a bag each of the moss and compost. I think that miracle grow would be too expensive, go to a local independent garden center-they may be less expensive than your big box stores.

I just started my first veggie garden.  I got a 4x4 box set from Lowe's.  For it I added 6 bags of the Miracle grow organic soil, one bag of top soil and one bag of cow manure.  Pics in my blog if you're interested.

We bought some cheaper soil for the bottom portion of the raised bed and then bought the miracle grow soil for veggies for the top portion.

Depending upon how big your bed is, you can also look into local nurseries who will deliver compost soil or mushroom manure or the like.  This is what I am doing for two 4x8 raised beds.

Get yourself to a nursery or Ace Hardware and buy Randy Lemmon's Gulf Coast Gardening book.  He is here in Houston and you can listen to him on 740 AM each Sat and Sunday morning.  He knows his stuff.

  If you are north Houston, you can go to Natures Way to get their soil or you can have them deliver.  It is supurb.  Also, their leaf mold compost is very good.

Just don't buy anything for trees and shrubs or house plants. They need different pH levels than veggies.
