lavender?

Has anyone ever grown lavender from a seed? I received an herb kit a few months ago containing oregano, thyme, and lavender. I stupidly forgot to label them after planting, and ended up moving them around and forgot which was which! Now that they are growing, I can tell which is the oregano, and I thought I figured out which was lavender and thyme, but now I'm not so sure. The one that I thought was lavender has leaves with purple on the underside. However, the thyme and lavender look very similar. Anyone know if the one I described is in fact the lavender?

Also, what are the uses for lavender?

Thanks!

Re: lavender?

  • I have a few lavender plants, but I didn't grow them from seed. The leaves aren't really purple though. They might get a dusty gray at some point, but not purple.

    The flowers are purple.

I don't know what to use it for other than sniffing. It smells pretty.

This, and I would think thyme would have a very distinct smell. I know lavender can be used for different medicinal uses..but as far as cooking I think you can but not 100% sure.

Here's a website I just found that may help:

  • You can use lavender as a flavoring. I like it in ice cream.

Sometimes I wonder if scientists have never seen a sci-fi movie before. "Oh yes, let's create a super species of deer. NOTHING COULD POSSIBLY GO WRONG." I wonder if State Farm offers a Zombie Deer Attack policy. -CaliopeSpidrman
  • I looked again and it definitely has purple on the underside of the leaves. They are still very small so they don't have any flowers yet, or any kind of distinct smell. If someone could tell me how to post pictures I have some, might help a little more.

    Thanks!

  • After a lot of googling, I think it might be the thyme...

  • You can make lavender scented sugar which could make a nice dessert flavoring.  Just pick the lavender flowers and add some to 2 cups of sugar in a jar and let them flavors blend for a few days.  Then sift the sugar to remove the lavender flowers.
  • the lavender promotes feelings of well being. strip the trimmed branch of lavender, run your fingers over the branch to release the flowers and greens. all them to dry and seep in water for an amazing bedtime tea. it also is nice to flavor rice.
